New PLEX version for Panasonic - When?

Hello Plex employees and all,

For when an upgrade to the PLEX client for Panasonic? I am a big fan of PLEX but Panasonic client is so poor when compared to other TV clients.

I do have:
Server : 1.14.0.5470
App : 3.13.21 (Smart TV Alliance 3.0)

I do have a lot of problems with the current version:

  • the app is generally very slow
  • only direct play MP4/MKV movies. No AVIs (independently of the codecs inside… if i use DLNA client on TV thy work, so it is not a problem of the TV not supporting it the media. i’ve played with ffmpeg to convert the “enclosure package” from AVI to MP4 and it starts playing immediately…
  • no subtitles possible - a file that plays without subtitle without any problem, as soon as i attach an SRT to it, it requires transcoding. i did give it a try with ffmpeg again to hard burn subtitles to movies, but it is a very time consuming effort, especially when you have a library with more than 500 movies (which i’m sure is very small compared to others)
  • cannot select/deselect subtitles before starting the video, which means that if i saw the video on another client, i need to use eiter the web server or a client that supports to change subtitle before playing the contents, to be able to see it on Panasonic TV.
  • can’t use secure connection to PMS
  • all contents are considered to be remote…

I also have a Samsung TV where i use the newer version that has been recently launched (3.3.4 i believe), and i must say it is great! Easier to use, faster navigation, can select subtitles before starting media play, can direct play/stream almost all videos i currently have.

Please give us Panasonic users a Christmas gift and make it standardized with LG/Samsung client

Yes, the Panasonic app lacks functionality and features compared to other platforms.

  • 4K HEVC w/o transcoding
  • Live TV and DVR

I’m not holding out much hope at the moment, I can’t use it due to the HEVC bug that forces transcoding but then they’ve not replied to the other threads about it.

I have contacted support and the answer I got was that they do not provide any timeframes. I also told them that their answer will effect my desicion to buy the Plex Plass. Guess that we won’t have any updates soon.

I got a semi acknowledgement once of my issue but then the person stop responding, it was the time they changed the forum board.

+1, pleasE refund the app on panasonic

Oh, I wasn’t aware of a new app already spread on other platforms, that might explain why we experience some outdated behaviours. I understand that Panasonic televisions not being currently sold in the US market can make this specific port feel less important, but their television sets are really good and aren’t negligible at all here in Europe.

I haven’t subscribed to Plex Pass so I’m not going to complain about how I feel cheated, but if I did, really, that’d make me so angry

Thank you for bringing this up, and I hope the Plex dev team is well aware and working hard to bring us an app we all can be proud of.

Sell it and buy a Lg or Samsung Smart TV.

What is the new app you are talking about here?

The Panasonic app was only released for the first time about 6 months ago.

I’m referring to the upgrade which seems to be much more than just a small bugfix. Sorry if that wasn’t clear.

And Samsung guys are lucky again - Plex just released a new preview for them Samsung 3.80.3 Preview.

When will Panasonic Plex users get same level of features ?

And please add the ability convert pgs subs into vobsub. Because at least the Panasonic ASW504 can display vobsubs in mkv containers.
Perhaps owners of other panasonic smart tvs can confirm.

+1 Please release a new version of the app, that does not force to transcode. Thanks!

It wouldn’t be the first.

There is a forum issue regarding auto-locking threads in the Smart TV category. I have notified a moderator because it appears to have only been fixed for this one thread so far.

Still not fixed I see, still forces transcoding via the Panasonic app.

+1 here. I was so happy when I first saw the app being released in mid 2018. However, it is still a disappointment. Please fix the very basic issues described above
