Plex "An unexpected playback problem occurred" - Panasonic TV + DS220+Plex "An unexpected playback p

Hello,

Since the end of the week, the message “An unexpected playback problem has occurred” appears when playing videos.
It’s a Panasonic TV TX-55GZW954. It only affects the TV.
The NAS runs as usual.

 Plex: version 4.84.1
 Syn.Version: PlexMediaServer-1.28.0.5999-97678ded3-x86_64_DSM7

I can watch the videos from my PC using a browser. Also possible via mobile phone and the Plex app.
So it’s somehow between the TV and the NAS/Plex.

Who has an idea?

Hello,
I discovered the same problem as you mentionned. Everything works behalve the Panasonic TV, but only with mkv videos. I hope a solution too.

Hi! I have the same problem.

Suddently it stopped working on the Panasonic TV. IT works on all other clients (PC Browser, iPhone, iPad). I have setup Plex Media Server from scratch on. Newest version. I am not able to resolve the problem.

My logs show the same problems. In my opinion the problem comes with the latest Panasonic software upgrade.

Some Information on my systems:
.
.
Server-Side:

Synology DS720+
Software: DSM 7.1-42661
PlexMediaServer-1.28.2.6106-44a5bbd28-x86_64_DSM7.spk => 1.28.2.6106-7000
(I am not insalling the beta release)

Client Side:

Panasonic TX-55FXW584
Software: 3.117

Video streaming from the following clients works without problems:

  • PC using Webbrowser.
  • iPhone
  • iPad

Steaming using the Panasonc worked before upgrading to release 3.117.

New files didn’t work for me. I was able to play older files on the NAS. And then all stopped working. That was a few days after the update.

I am running 3.117 on my panasonic tv. I am not able to downgrade. Although older software releases can be downloaded the tv doese not allow to install an older release :-(. Resetting the tv to factory default also did not help. :frowning: Maybe someone know how the panasonic can be downgraded? I tried it using an USB stick.

I am pretty sure the problem is related to the TV. This is the only device where something has chanced on my side. This shows me: Never update the TV firmware until there is a real need to do so.

Hi! I had a conversation with Panasonic. They asked me the hard reset the TV. After doing so the problem was still remained. Panasonic also explained to me that the TV software can not be downgraded. Panasonic explained that the app developer takes responsibilitiy of the app. It seems that Plex needs to have a look at this.

Hi! Did you find a solution so far?

The following Panasonic TVs should still be supported:

I found mine on the list.

The question is: How do we get someone from “Plex” involved to verify this problem?

There must be a problem with the last update. Panasonic and Plex problem. There is no solution yet.

Hi guys!
I’ve the same issue as described. Plex stopped working on the Panasonic TV. On my other mobile devices everything works properly.

My first guess is also, that it’s maybe because of the Panasonic Firmware update. But I recognized the issue a few days after the update, because some MP4 files seem to be working (also on the TV)
So the update is the only thing that has changed.

Has someone already involved Panasonic or PLEX (or both) about this error??

Hey,

That’s how it was for me, too. A few days after the update, the problems started. Or rather, everything that was listed in the Plex until the update was played. All new files that were in the Plex were not played. 3-4 days later no file was played at all. Since Plex makes the app specifically for Panasonic, we would be right here!

Hi Andreas,

I involved Panasonic as described above. I started the support chat. ´

I asked if it is possible to downgrade the Panasonic TV Firmware/Software somehow. The answer was no.

I explained the issue but the person on the other side just explained to me that I can only try to “hard” reset the TV instead of doing a “soft” reset. The “hard” reset should be more cleaner. On my Panasonic TV the “hard” reset is being done by holding the “volume -” button on the TV and then holding the “menu” button on the remote control. When doing the “hard reset” all cables should be unplugged from the TV beside the cable-tv cable (I use cable).

I did the hard reset.

Then I started the Plex app and logged in.

After starting the first movie stream the following message (german) “Titel: Videowiedergabe; Text: Wiedergabe wurde nicht für dieses Gerät optimiert. Alle Videos aus deiner eigenen Mediathek könnten bei der Wiedergabe transkodiert werden” came up.

By clicking (german) “Fortfahren” the app tried to start the movie but it again did not work. This time the following message (german) “Titel: Wiedergabefehler; Text: Ein unerwartetes Wiedergabeproblem ist aufgetreten (An Unexpected Playback Problem Occurred …)”. came up.

From now on always the second message came up and no movies played.

I explained to the person from Panasonic that the problem can not be resolved this way. The person from Panasonic explained to me that this is an app developed by Plex and so Plex must take care of it. They also explained to me that I can take the TV to a technican. Sad but true.

To be honest I hoped so far that Plex can provide a solution somehow.

So what did I do next.

Yesterday evening I spend 2-3 hours playing around with the topic. First of all I tried to downgrade the Plex Media Server somehow to verify if I can solved the issue this way. At the end I was not able to downgrade that easily. I am using the latest version (Plex pass).

Then I did another “hard reset” of my TV again and continued with the plex App first. The reason I did this was because I only wanted to note down again what error messages I get. So I did the “hard reset” and I started the Plex App again. I logged in and tried to start a movie. Now the interesting part. Again the first message was as described above: “Titel: Videowiedergabe; Text: Wiedergabe wurde nicht für dieses Gerät optimiert. Alle Videos aus deiner eigenen Mediathek könnten bei der Wiedergabe transkodiert werden”. I think I waited a minute and clicked “continue”. And then the movie started! hmmm. My first impression. Wow. Cool. I found the problem. Maybe I did something wrong with the hard reset first time. All movies started from there on.

So ok. I did another hard reset and started again from scratch on. This time I also did the auto setup to get all programs onto the TV. I started the Plex App again and this time I run into the same Plex issues again. aaaaarrrggh. Why?

I did another hard reset and started with the plex app again. and this time I run into the same Plex issues again. aaaaarrrggh. Why?

To be honest. For some reason and I do not know why it worked. Since then it does not work again. I am not able to fix it again. I am not able to reproduce the procedure that worked.

I am wondering if the problem has something to do with the app caching on the TV. Currently I try to find out if there are possibilities to completely clear the TVs app cache.

If needed I can also provide log files. If needed I can change my Plex setting to english so it is easier for the Plex support to support.

Hopefully someone from Plex will help us soon.

HELP PLEASE

Thanks and BR
B.

Hi again.

I saw that the problem does not just seem to be related to Panasonic. Also Samsung TV Users report this problem. I saw that Samsung also uses the Plex app version 5.44.6.

On my TV I am also running Plex app version 5.44.6.

I assume that the Plex app was updated and this causes the problem. It is not possible to influence which version you run.

I did another hard reset without internet connectivity on my TV. Afterwards the app was not there. As soon as Internet is enabled the app gets installed. Version 5.44.6.

I never did a Plex app update on the TV manually. So it is very likely that this being done automatically.

What is your Plex app version? Can we tear the problem down to this version?

Unser Plex app Settings you can verify it.

Look forward on reading from you.

As far as I can tell, the problems started with the media server update to 1.28.0.999 - that was the only thing that had changed when the problems occurred - with 1.27.2.5929 everything went smoothly. Suddenly, previously functioning films no longer played. I’ve tried a few things. Downgrade to 1.27.2.929 - no effect. Update to 1.28.2.6106 - no effect. Updating and even reinstalling Plex (server and player) on multiple devices - no effect. Downscaling some videos - worked on some, but not all, and the quality suffered tremendously (And let’s be honest, I’m not downscaleing over 700 movies now.). Permissions distributed and taken, media libraries re-read, media libraries separated and newly inserted, all without effect. Plex works on all devices (Smartphone, tablet, PC), except on the TV. Also, the screening from the mobile phone to the TV ends with the “unexpected playback error”. Meanwhile, I have at least packed my music videos on a stick to be able to use my TV with the sound system, movies are played in the BluRay player. Very unfortunate that Plex no longer works! What else I noticed: Plex flickers since the update (especially in the menu and settings) and sometimes tabs disappear.
