New seasons of old shows won't drop off On Deck...

Yes you just added them so it makes sense.

Some people expect previous seasons not to show but as describe in https://support.plex.tv/articles/201543177-what-are-on-deck-and-continue-watching-for/ we will always show the first unplayed one…
Which anwsers the question of why season1 is showing on deck when 2 aired… And why I ask if season 2 was added (not aired).

Also the fact that some shows were accessed recently also play a role on how On Deck works, particularly the order.

This is why I was asking for a screenshot, because to be honest. I was indeed getting confused from the several comments and the use of the “aired” term, no added.

After we clarify this. we will be able to tell if there’s indeed a bug.

One thing is certain, if nothing is added as new episodes or played, and the time (16 weeks) as passed, then that show show shouldn’t be showing on Deck.

But note that this time doesn’t count from when you added episode 1 of season 1, but the last time that you added something or played and episode. Thats when you would start counting the 16 weeks (not when ep1 was first added or aired).
So naturally if a new season/ep was added recently the counter starts again.

I think you’re still misunderstanding me.

Season 1 episodes aren’t showing up, S02E01 is showing on deck after not watching the show for a year. I’m not sure how else to explain this, sorry. I can just live with it.

@amcdon that would still be normal if thats the first unplayed episode you have AND you’ve added the show in less that 16 weeks (or 3 weeks if that’s the setting you have).

This is why I’ve asked above for clarification if something was recently added to that library or if a new season aired (but you don’t really have the content in PMS).

Looking at you’re logs again (the ones you sent on 31/07, I noticed a Season 4 of the show you mentioned in PM was added.

So even if you have watched the show for 1 year, the logs show new added content and this would put it back on “On Deck”.

If you want to make sure it goes a way and since some time has passed try changing the setting to “1 week” and see if that S02E01 is no longer there.

Based on what @amcdon said in this post: New seasons of old shows won’t drop off On Deck... what they are saying is that they added the season 1 episodes in summer 2017 as they air (so let’s effectively say the add date is the air date or air date + 1 day). All of those episodes from season 1 were watched the same day as they were aired (or marked as played as added, either way they are marked as played).

Now, fast forward to 1 year later (well past their 3 week On Deck/Continue Watching threshold) and season 2 is now airing in summer 2018. Again, they are adding the season 2 episodes to their server the same as previously described (so again add date is either air date or air date + 1 day). As soon as the add the first episode of season 2, it is showing up On Deck, even though the On Deck/Continue Watching threshold is way past the limit.

Hopefully that will clarify it for you @mikec_pt.
And hopefully I explained it correctly @amcdon, as what I wrote is how I interpreted what you said.

I feel like you guys are all saying the same thing, the only difference is some people see it as a bug, and some people see it as a feature.

When you add S02E01 a year later it’s not past the On Deck limit, because the On Deck timer doesn’t start until after it’s been added. Once it’s been added, then the timer starts, and 4 weeks or whatever later, it drops.

It appearing in On Deck has nothing to do with the actual air date or when you last watched the previous season, it only has to do with when you added it. If you add S02E01 a decade from now it will still show up in On Deck if you previously watched S01 at some point in the past.

If you don’t want to have S02E01 show up On Deck a year later, then the only thing I could think of is to mark S01 as Unplayed.

Except that’s not how it works in my experience.

On Deck is based on when you last watched something and when you last added something (my opinion/observation). The air date has nothing to do with it.

Again. I have Better Call Saul on my server. I added season 3 last year while it was airing and watched it off my server. When season 3 ended, (June 19) I had all of season 3 marked as played. Season 4 started this year on August 6. My On Deck is set for the default of 16 weeks. According to your logic, I should have seen S04E01 in my On Deck once I added it. I did not.

The way I just explained it, is how it has worked for me since I’ve started using Plex many years ago.

This really depends on how the developers implemented On Deck. Based on the behavior I have seen, you are incorrect. On Deck is based on date added and last watched (again my opinion/observation).

On Deck absolutely has to do with whether you watched the previous season. If you never watched the previous season (from your Plex servers POV) then there is no reason to put the next episode you just added On Deck.

While the Plex support article doesn’t really give a black and white answer, this quote goes does point to the fact that you need to have watched a previous episode for On Deck to consider it:

Source: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201543177-what-are-on-deck-and-continue-watching-for/

While the exact date that you actually watched a previous season does not matter, Plex does look to see that the previous episode to what you just added was watched to determine what is shown On Deck (again my opinion based on observation).

Really, what we need is for Plex to let us know how they actually intended On Deck to work. @mikect_pt, this has been asked a few times in this thread. Can you possibly get a clarification on the logic behind On Deck?

@shark2k correct, this is why I wanted to clear out the confusion around added /aired / played.

You are correct in saying that On Deck counter restarts after something new is added, not only when it was last played.
But to some users the fact that we show the last unplayed one … seems to cause some confusion and even feels like a bug.

Its not, BUT I can see this being a bit of a problem if you added this new seasons because this is simply content you share with a friend…
It feels like plex keeps bugging you “Hey have u seen this”, “Hey sure you don’t want to see this”… every day, and never goes aways unless you change the pref to a shorter wait time (which you might not want, cause you still want a longer stay On Deck for the rest of the content) or mark all items played on those shows (which only works if you really have no intention to see it)

So in a way perhaps there’s something here that could be different, perhaps what some people would like to see is the ability to remove items from “On Deck” (regardless of the time limit pref)?

As of Plex Media Server 1.12.1.4871 (March 14th) * Season premieres show up in On Deck even when they’re outside the window (#8229).

Apparently, this was a requested feature. It annoys me as my On Deck has exploded from the 5 shows I am watching to 15 shows. 10 of which I’m not watching until seasons are completed (but they recently had season premieres).

I have always just used the built in “Rediscover” feature for TV shows to pick a new season or remind me to continue a show.

I knew I wasn’t crazy! Thank you for finding that. I can’t imagine why it was requested and made to be the only option. Definitely seems like something that should be able to be toggled.

That explains it then. Due to certain circumstances I am still on 1.11.0.4666, which was before that “improvement.” So I am still seeing the old method and when I eventually able to upgrade my server version, I too will be seeing this happen.

Hopefully @mikec_pt can get the developers to make this option a toggle so that we can have the old behavior or the new behavior depending on what we would prefer.

[EDITED] Sorry I posted to early before and was assuming something wrong.

That change should mean that if a new season is added the premiere gets re-added to On Deck, but it shouldn’t stay that forever and I can’t really replicate it.

Now it may seem like it because you keep adding new content hence it never seems to disappear, and I can see how that is a bit annoying.

The good news is a found an internal report where a change is proposed, the idea is that this should be a bit smarter, meaning it should only do this for the next unwatched season)

I cannot promise when or if this change will ever happen, only that its been requested, and if I am being 100% honest I do find that it can be a bit annoying.

The ideal solution would be to remind me there’s a new season premier but ONLY for when the next unwatched season is added.
