"New sign-in to your Plex account"

Plex Web version 4.48.1
Plex Server ver. 1.21.0.3711 (on Linux Mint 20 - 64bit)

I just manually signed out, then signed back in to my account using Plex Web on Firefox. Shortly after, I received an email with the title “New sign-in to your Plex account.” The contents of this email said “A new device was used to sign in to your Plex account,” followed by my account info. It was obviously referring to the steps I just took.

Why does Plex think this is a “new device?” Of course, such emails are a security measure, to help identify unauthorized attempts. But if Plex reports every sign-in as a “new device,” it nullifies that security measure, since it becomes a “boy who cried ‘Wolf!’” situation. If a user receives this email every time they sign in, they will eventually begin to ignore it.

I don’t think this necessarily happens on every sign-in, but perhaps the new sign-in plus a change of the web client version being used to sign in. I did the same thing and received the same notification. I then did it once again a few minutes later and didn’t receive the notification. According to my Authorized Devices, I have a new “device,” Plex Web version 4.48.1. My previous sign-in was an earlier version.

I could be wrong; perhaps there’s a cool down period between sign-ins and that caused my second sign out/sign in to not trigger the e-mail.

Signing out destroys the security token.
Signing in creates a new token = new device.

Here it happens every time I open the Plex client on a certain TV, and sometimes when I do it on another TV. Not a new sign-in in either of the cases. There really should be a way for this functionality to be implemented in a better way, otherwise it’s a) really annoying, b) beats the purpose and causes the wolf-crying-situation as described in the OP.

Your TV is probably not saving state and is signing in as a new device every time.

Some TVs are SUPER dumb. Well, most TVs are super dumb.
