"New" status in guide ignored by DVR when episode already exists

I think I stumbled onto a quirk (could be a feature or a bug). I have mulitple tuners with the same show in my DVR setup. I was recording Grey’s Anatomy at the end of the November and somehow the same episode was recorded twice: one from 2 different tuners. The first copy received the expected episode info:

Grey’s Anatomy (2005) - S16E08 - My Shot.ts

The second tuner recorded the same episode but incremented the episode # (and with it, the episode title):

Grey’s Anatomy (2005) - S16E09 - Let’s All Go to the Bar.ts

Remember, that file is NOT actually episode 9. I think this occurred because I had temporarily set the show to recored new and repeat episodes.

Anyway, the next week, episode 10 airs and plex gets confused. Episode 10 is not yet in the TVDB (as of November), so it gives the file the following name:

Grey’s Anatomy (2005) - S16E10 - TBD.ts

I guess since the double-episode issue, this is kind of making sense, and easy enough to fix.

But here is the strange part. We have not yet watched episode 8 nor 9 nor the mis-named episode 10. Grey’s starts again tomorrow night where the real episode 10 will air. However, Plex was not listing Grey’s in Thursday’s DVR schedule.

After some experimentation, I found the solution: First, I deleted the duplicate the episode 8 and properly named episode 9. Then I re-scanned the files in my TV folder. Once that was done, Grey’s appeared in the DVR schedule as expected.

I thought that the New/repeat info that Plex used was coming from the TV Guide info. But my data shows that there is some cross-talk between the TV Guide and the file system.

It seems to me that the Guide Info should be the decider of new/repeat.

Have I found a weird feature/bug, or were my expectations misguided?

Anyone? Bueller?

the guide ‘new’ or not is just guide data, and is supposed to indicate if the video is the first time aired (ie do you want to record a rerun or not). do note, this is only as accurate as what the guide provider provides (meaning it really is meaningless in my experience).

it has nothing to do with what is in your library.

plex dvr will not record over an existing episode in the library unless one of 2 things…

  • if the dvr has internally marked the episode as incomplete (ie a recording got interupted)
  • if you have ‘upgrade’ from lower quality, ie if you have an sd recording, then an HD recording airs, it will ‘upgrade’ to the hd recording.

I get that it won’t overwrite, but by auto-incrementing It can cause issues as I’ve described. Maybe it’s and edge case, but why use guide data if you ignore it for episode number and air date?

well the incrementing thing I think is some kind of bug or bad guide data.

the new/repeats thing has always been.

I always set all my recordings to new+repeats, because as stated, plex doesn’t overwrite (unless you configure it to), and you can leave a schedule in place over existing series to fill in any missing episodes.

Just FYI, for Grey’s, some markets (including mine) messed up the episode numbering for a couple of weeks. I think it was a reporting error, I did not record two episodes, for me it just “skipped” an episode (in reality it didn’t skip, it recorded 07, then it recorded 09 which was actually 08 or something like that) making it so if I didn’t catch it, I already had “episode 10” when they aired it so it didn’t record (when in reality I only had episode 9, just numbered incorrectly). I think it’s been fixed now, but haven’t really been paying attention. When things like that happen, I screen cap/record/download them direct from the network typically.
