New to Plex but need Live TV & DVR to work locally!

  1. where do I quickly and easily find the info to populate the details requested above? GUI?
  2. just installed Plex server on Win10 w/plex pass & 2 tuners (Hauppage WinTV DualHD) and have been trying to get it to work for us. been 2 days of frustration. Must I also install windows 10 app??
  3. don’t have big libraries of media that I want/need to share with multiple devices - primarily need to watch & record OTA TV even when internet is not available (which is frequent for us). and be able to travel with recorded TV.

Was using Windows Media Center (w/4 tuners) on Win7 until the PC failed last week. It worked flawlessly. No buffering. Could watch live and recorded TV when on generator (i.e., when utility power and internet was out), could copy recorded TV to win7 laptop for viewing when traveling.

Trying Plex as replacement and so far not working so either few others want live TV to work or I did something wrong on install/setup! Live tv is constantly “buffering”. Doesn’t matter if I’m watching (or trying to) on the server or connected Samsung Smart TV. Transcoder seems to be using high CPU (up to 80%) with even one tuner. Recorded news last night and played later - it seemed to be ok. Live TV is horrid. Couldn’t even connect to a channel this am.

Before I completely give up on Plex (there seem to be many supporters out there), what am I doing wrong? How do I make this work?? There are features that seem great but without the ability to watch/record OTA w/o internet Plex will not work for us.

since you didn’t give any hardware details, it sounds like you are using a low powered computer or laptop?

most ota streams are mpeg2, which unfortunately doesn’t direct play in most web/browser based clients.

you can try the plex for windows app, or plex htpc app (you can have both installed), from the plex downloads @ Media Server Downloads | Plex Media Server for Windows, Mac, Linux, FreeBSD and More (be sure to click ‘apps & devices’ instead of the default server).

There are a lot of ongoing threads about the watching Live TV in Plex right now. Some of the them are very long running. A significant percentage of the user base for Live TV/DVR is very upset at the moment. I would encourage you to ask for a refund and try something else.

teknojunky - yes, for initial test using laptop (i7 M620 @ 2.67 ghz, 8GB ram; 64gbit os). trying windows app now and its seems to be using a bit less CPU but still seems choppy

moviewiz - saw a number of those threads as I was researching - hoped I had missed something with a resolution! fortunately I only did a 1-month subscription and unless someone at Plex responds with a fix I won’t be here long! Any suggestions for another utility?

I use NextPVR and it really works great for me – a lot more reliable than Plex – although I would prefer that Plex get their act together as there are other features that I would take advantage of – been waiting for 3 years though. Plex still doesn’t allow you to record by time/channel when the EPG has errors – which can be frustrating since this can prevent you from recording what you want to record.

NextPVR is free and there is a plugin for it in Jellyfin. You do need to provide EPG data to NextPVR though. If you have a reliable/compatible XMLTV source you can use that. Or you can get a Schedules Direct subscription for $25 per year.

You will need a MPEG2 decoder to watch TV in the Windows client that’s included with NextPVR. If you don’t have one, you can use the free LAV Filters.

thanks for the suggestion MovieWiz - trying it now (already have Schedules Direct for WMC).

For playing locally, it should just play direct (i.e. no transcoding) in the Windows Client. The guy that maintains NextPVR is somewhat more responsive to fixing bugs than Plex – in that he responds to the problems. I’ve had revised program files within a few hours after reporting a problem. I think it’s just a hobby for him but it certainly appears that he really cares.
