New To Plex, Need some expereinced help

Hi Guys,

I am new to Plex, here is what I want to achieve

  • Store my MP3 collection on a server (Possibly a NAS device)
  • Play my music through my Alexa enabled sound bar
  • Play my music through my windows based Laptops
  • Play my music on my Samsung S10 phone when I am running/away from home

Firstly - Is this possible
Secondly - What equipment will I need (without spending hundreds of pounds)

Hope someone can help
Richard

It should all be possible. A NAS is not so cheap though.

edit: I have no experience with Alexa so cannot answer that one.
…I am not sure there is an Alexa skill (did I say that right?) for Plex.

Buy some decent USB3 Desktop external drives, they have served me well

You’ll be needing a working remote access from the outside to your Plex server.

I recommend you to install the Plex server onto your computer first, to try out Plex in general. This can be done for free.
Later, when you have verified that your internet connection is able to support remote access, you can move to a NAS device.
Then you can also consider getting a Plex Pass, which grants you access to the Plexamp app, which is built with music-only in mind.

So If i used a NAS or my laptop computer assuming i leave it on 24/7 I should be able to access my music on my phone when outside of the house too?

If your only concerned about music, you really don’t need a NAS device. Now of days the drives in computers should be big enough to store large amounts of music and you can easily add a cloud backup for your music if that is needed.

Install the Plex server on a computer that is on all the time with enough storage for your music library or add an eternal drive for that. Music does not require a lot of bandwidth so unless you have dialup their should not be a problem with that. Just make sure that the remote access is enabled and working.

You have to pay for the android app if you don’t have a Plex Pass which I believe is 5 dollars.

If you get remote access to work, yes. https://support.plex.tv/articles/200289506-remote-access/

This is mainly dependent on your ISP and the type of internet connection. So try it out first, before making any investments.

A decent upstream speed will be required

For music-only, you should be good with 1mbps upstream, actually.
