TL/DR – I have been using Plex since 2012 and I have loved using it ever since. This new app though, is making me look at alternatives.
I, among others, express great concerns about the new app layout and functionality.
Here are the issues I experience with the newest app:
*Some playlist load and others do not. I think this is based on the number of items in the playlist. However, I never had this issue on the old app or web interface. Has been fixed
* One of my libraries claims there are no items in it, yet the web interface sees them just fine. Has been fixed.
Here are my complaints about the newest app:
- User interface is worse than the old app.
- Playlists take longer to navigate to and are separated in each library. In the old app I would just click Playlists and be able to see all my playlists. (2 presses on the old app vs 3-5 presses on the new app [assuming you selected the correct library to begin with])
- Libraries also take longer to get to on the new app. (1-2 presses on the old app vs 2-3 on the new app.)
- Poor Functionality
*I can no longer shuffle a library. I have a dedicated library for TV Shows to just shuffle through them as background noise. “Why not just create a playlist?” – Because the playlist wont load with the number of items in there, plus every time I would add a tv show to the list I would have to re-create the playlist.Fixed in 2025.16.0 (iOS and ipadOS)- Navigation is also slow in the newer app. It takes longer to load items.
- Overall, it is just slow compared to the old app.
The UI/UX team really dropped the ball on this one.
I use Plex daily. When I am working on weekends by myself patching/upgrading servers I have Plex on as background noise. When I am cleaning my house, I hit the shuffle function on my shuffle tv show library or playlist as background noise. Now I can’t do either one of those.
If Plex continues to go with this new app and not fix any of these functionally/UI issues I will take my business elsewhere.
