New user - can't install/ open Plex server under OSX High Sierra

Hi,

I’m a new user of Plex and wanted to do a trial install of Plex Server on my iMac which is running OSX High Sierra and up to date with patches etc.
I’ve downloaded the Zip file and when opening it there is nothing visibly happening although an entry has been added to my Applications folder and also into Library/ Application Support.
If I try and open the application nothing at all seems to happen.

I’d really appreciate some help - if I need to send a log file could someone please let me know details etc.
thanks.

When you run the Plex Media Server app on your Mac, you should see a Plex icon in the right corner of your menu bar. Through this menu you can interact with the server.
The icon also includes a menu item to open the server.

Alternatively you can directly get there through Safari by entering 127.0.0.1:32400/web or localhost:32400/web in the address bar.

When opening Plex for the first time, it’ll walk you through a setup wizard to configure your actual server and its libraries.

There’s a number of helpful guides and support articles

Hi Tom, Thanks for the response; my problem is that I don’t believe installation is actually completing properly so I’m not seeing any Plex icon in the menu bar.

I’ve just tried navigating to localhost:32400/web in the browser but I get a ‘failed to open page’ error.

I’m wondering if there is something like a permissions issue which is preventing the install completing but would expect it to show an error message if that was the case.
Are there any log files which might help?

Is this of any help?

Are you running the App with a different user account?
Otherwise you might want to checkout permissions for the folder named in this log.

Hello, I am having the exact same problem as “adrianhazeldine” (who started this thread. I HAD flex working fine on my macOS (HighSierra), but then I decided to do a factory-deinstall on my Mac. I logged into plex.tv and downloaded the SERVER app and it downloaded fine, but when I went to double-click on the download, all it does is ask to transfer it into Applications folder and then just sits there doing nothing!..and there is no > in the top menu bar or any indication is has done anything. when I go to my safari page where I logged into, it just keeps looking for a server and never finds it! help!!

Hi Tom, I’m using the same account and have also run first aid against the disk which usually repairs any broken permissions etc but will investigate further.

Hi pcantu, this is interesting as I had a failed HDD on my iMac recently and had to restore from a Time Machine backup!
Just out of interest - what version of OSX are you running?

Hi, I think I’ve fixed this by copying across the contents of library/logs/Plex Media Server from the installation on my laptop onto the iMac and the server now starts.

Hi adrianhazeldine,
I’m running 10.13.6 Mac High Sierra on a 1 year old iMac. Unfortunately I do not have a separate/backup copy of “library/logs/Plex Media Server” from my previous installation. I did a system restore on this iMac and I am installing EVERYTHING from scratch…including Plex. I went ahead and deleted the current …/logs/Plex Media Server/*.log (s) and while I’m logged in my Plex (via safari) I again downloaded the Plex Server download and tried launching it. it still just sits there and does not give me the > in the menu toolbar ontop of screen. what to do??? anyone? her is my log-file from my attempted launch, if it helps anyone…

That appears to be a very different issue.
The log says your database has been corrupted. There’s a chance you can still fix this. Please check out the support article on how to repair the database and give those instructions a chance.

If you cannot repair/fix the database you might need to start setting up your server from scratch — but let’s not jump to conclusions.
