New user issues with folder view and song titles

Server Version#: 1.18.0.1913
Player Version#:

Hi, I am a new Plex user on Nvidia Shield and been fighting to get things setup in our new place. Other than a corrupt DB in the beginning things are starting to come together (1 step back, 2 forward kind of deal) with the Plex setup but one major problem I have run into is around browsing for music.

My music collection is a disaster in terms of metadata and honestly I don’t need or want the player to do anything smart. Right now, the automatic organization that Plex applies to the music is a total dumpster fire and I have my music organized into folders which is how I would like to use it.

  1. On the web client I am able to view my media based on folders (good) but on the Android client (Shield and Android phone) there is no obvious way to browse and play based on folders. How can I browse items in Android based folder?
  2. Additionally, many of the songs displayed either have no title or have a incorrect title due to the metadata which historically isn’t a problem for me because I just want to display the filename. Is it possible to just have the filename displayed as the music title?

Thanks

1 With the library in “Library” mode, Folder view is on the dropdown where you select Artists/Albums/Tracks.

  1. There’s no way I know of to have Plex just show the filename.

That is my problem, I don’t see a option for folders. Here are some screen shots of both the TV (running Shield) and the android app on phone.

I found a thread where someone had a similar issue on a different Android TV device. You might look through that thread and see if their solution works for you.

The steps in the referenced thread didn’t have any effect. Before following the steps I had already completely reset my shield again, setup Plex again, cleared cache, updated, etc. Also, the other thread was for fire stick which I would assume is an entirely different client implementation.

I have actually never seen the folder view available for any type of library on the Shield client app. Is your sample you shared taken from the latest versions? Is there a difference between the standard Android TV client and Shield client (I wouldn’t think that would be the case but asking just in case)?

Well, it was a shot. I don’t know what might cause this to happen. Hopefully one of the ninjas will step in with some more ideas.

To the best of my knowledge the Shield client is the standard Android-TV client. I don’t recall the release notes mentioning any difference.
The screenshot I provided was from the latest, 8.7.0.20631.

Are there any developers or other folks running Plex on Shield that can weigh in on this behavior? After countless re-scanning, reboots, destroying and recreating libraries, etc I have not seen a solution to this. I restructured some of the music files to make it a little more manageable but its still a disaster TBH from a usability perspective based on how we want to utilize our media.

Beyond all of that, the scanner and recognition process seems wildly flaky. I was trying to include properly structured CBS Radio Mystery Theater content and no matter what I did the scanner wouldn’t recognize them generally and some error (not present in verbose logging) was causing other normally fine songs to be categorized under the wrong artists and not even displayed other than search.

In desperation I created a entirely separate library just for the audio theater files and then the normal music was not butchered but the mystery theater files are each put into their own album (despite the same album tag value) which ends up being over 1100. BTW, I have checked all the tags on the audio files to make sure they are consistent.

I like some things about Plex and would be inclined to pay for the service with a Pass but I think the service needs to reach a relatively stable state.

FWIW: support for video seems far and away more stable than audio support for some reason.

Are you still on this server version? This version is a year old now - have you tried upgrading?

@drzoidberg33 Stupid question I guess - how do I upgrade that? I run Plex on the Shield and the app is updated to the latest version. I haven’t seen a separate app for the server separate from the client so I though the app on the Shield was a combined package I guess.

It’s just updated through the Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb&hl=en

It should be kept updated with the rest of your apps though so it would be odd to still be on this version, just check the Play Store and ensure there aren’t any updates waiting.

@drzoidberg33 Awesome, thanks and that did the trick. I don’t know why the PMS doesn’t show up in my apps on the Shield or prompt for an auto update but when I went searching for it I was able to locate and update it.

Now I am seeing folder option showing up so the issue is resolved.
