For some videos, the new video player strangely does not (always) start playback. It has been random trial and error. I was trying to play an h264 1080p 22mbps with vobsub subtitles (in order to test playback without transcoding) and I was only able to get playback going once. All other attempts failed. Switching off the experimental player fixes the issue but then we’re back to transcoding.
Note that from a quick test, I don’t seem to have any issues with SD material. The video plays flawlessly on Plex Media Player (x64).

Here’s an example (about 100Mb).
Strange. At the first attempt right after fresh install it works, but then after trying a few times I never can get it to work. Since I couldn’t play it back on my iPhone 7 Plus, I tried installing the beta on my older iPad 2 mini. It worked fine once or twice, playback started nearly immediately (with a little noticeable choppiness due to the older CPU model) but after a few times it doesn’t work anymore. .
When playback on iPhone 7 plus (A10 fusion CPU) playback doesn’t start, it spins forever. Occasionally it works again but it’s a lucky shot… Waiting a bit in between playback seems to help too… (like several minutes!)

@Voyager1 thank you! I just tried it, the only scenario where I had trouble is when I selected the English PCM audio track. In that case, the video is transcoded.
Could that be the problem you have? Please confirm if you have selected the PCM track and it’s actually transcoding.
In any case, the fact that it’s transcoding when PCM is selected is a bug (already fixed, will be out in the next beta).

Thanks but this is not it. However you made me think of something. My default subtitles are Dutch. When I turn off the pgs subtitles, playback starts every time. When I turn them back on (first Dutch in the list) the problem is back. By the way PCM works fine for me…
Tried all subtitles and all worked fine. Could you try to restart your device and server and try again?
If it still doesn’t work, please reproduce the issue again and send me the logs immediately after.

dear @sergiou87 indeed restarting the device helped. When transcoding is needed (like with the PCM5.1 track) the spinning is still there but eventually playback starts. When no transcoding is needed (like with the AC3 track) playback is now immediate. I don’t know how long it will work before the issue comes back. Is there a logical explanation for this, why a restart was needed?
Besides that, I have noticed another issue: sometimes playback without transcode (this example and others!) has no video (black screen) - only audio…
If there is, it’s totally beyond my knowledge, sorry 
Yeah that’s a known issue, super hard to reproduce, but I think it’s fixed in the next beta
