New Windows Plex App Turns Off HDR

Whenever I go into fullscreen (Not TV Mode) on this new plex app for windows, it turns off HDR mode in windows display settings. I have to re-enable HDR everytime I try to go fullscreen. I cannot watch any movie in HDR with this new app, But the PMP app worked fine. Going back to the PMP for now. Hope this gets fixed soon.

Sorry if this topic is out there already, I couldn’t find one with this problem exactly.

I am using older version with Windows 10 Pro 1809 with AMD Radeon VII and do not have this problem.

Thanks for the reply. I’m not sure what I can do to fix it. I’m running the latest windows update with latest GPU drivers and the latest plex app for windows and it just started doing this. I can reinstall the old PMP app and everything works fine again though.

Since the Plex Desktop player is not a replacement for PMP, you may want to keep using PMP until the Plex Desktop player matures a bit.

Yea you’re right. I hope by Jan 30th, 2020, When they stop updating the old PMP it will be ready.

Or even beyond that. It’s not expected that PMP will drop dead in its tracks on February 1

Good for you.
In fact the bug is active and its a major bug. Plex must not alter the windows configuration.

I believe he was just providing another data point, not discounting anyone else’s experience…

Yes exactly - I gave details of setup where it works with no problem

YMMV

So you’re able to view true HDR content using PMP? I’ve been trying to find info about support for HDR on Windows 10 with either PMP or new Plex but seem to find conflicting reports. PMP does fine at playing my 4K rips, but they are all tone-mapped. I’ve seen reports of people saying they have it working in PMP, but I wonder if they are all just referring to the tone-mapped video and assume it’s fine because it’s not washed out. It seems surprising that there isn’t a way to do this, but I sure can’t find any official settings/documentation about it.

Edit: Bottom line up front - the (temporary) manual fix for scaling provided by Plex for their new app also fixes the full screen HDR problem.

I had the same problem with 4K and HDR. Whenever I went full screen, Windows would disable HDR. If I play in windowed mode, no issues. I thought it was a scaling issue, but even with scaling off in Windows it still happens.

Well - it is a scaling issue, but not a Windows scaling issue.

The manual fix suggested by Plex to adjust the new app’s scaling problems until they push a solution not only fixes the size of the icon and text in the Plex app (I can now see them easily from 10’ distance) but ALSO FIXES the full screen HDR.

See my post at https://www.timekills.org/2019/09/fix-plex-scaling-and-hdr-issues-with-new-windows-plex-player-app/ for details and the solution.

Hi folks, @timekills, please give 1.3 a try. Is it better behaved, or, still well behaved?

1.3 Solves the problem I was having. (HDR in fullscreen)

1.3 does fix the scaling issues and appears to resolve the issues with HDR turning off as well.
Not the correct thread, but if we could just get the framerate switching, keyboard controls, and buffer size choice back - that would be great.
