So I have just set up my first Plex media server. I’m going through uploading movies and for the most part everything seems to be going pretty seamlessly.
I am having an issue though. I am doing the Resident Evil series of movies and Extinction and After Life are coming up as the same movie on the server itself. But when I look at the saved files they are labeled properly. Initially they were both being saved as Extinction. So I went in and got the cover art for Afterlife and put it in. Then when I went and added Extinction back in it and put it in as Afterlife. And when it does this it takes the second copy and combines them both so that it only shows one cover art with a little number two above it. Then when you split it apart it show and plays the same movie for either one you click on. Let me know if this doesn’t make sense and thanks in advance for your help!
I’ve tried putting everything into individual folders and the issue seems to have resolved. I was just dropping all of the files into one Public Movies folder on the server. After reading some stuff on here I saw the folder thing and it seems to be working now. Also I may try adding the year on the end like you have.
As I’m writing this I’m also importing The Godfather Part 2 which is on two disks. It is doing the thing where its grouping them under the same art with the little “2” on it. Will they play okay when it’s all said and done?
The First Olympics Athens 1896 (1984) - pt1
The First Olympics Athens 1896 (1984) - pt2
PLEX will see that as one long show. When you get to the end of part 1, it will automatically start part 2.
And yes, every movie needs the year at the end. You don’t need individual folders. I do for movies that have at least three films in their group. But if you put ONE film in a folder, the folder has to have the same name as the film. Better off not doing that.
I’m not sure if I should start a new thread here or not. I’ve now moved on to trying to add Grimm (TV series beginning 2011) to the server. I’m having multiple issues here…
a.) Each disk is being lumped together in one continuous file like the Godfather thing above. Making only watching one episode a time difficult as the chapters are just being added together with no episode separation.
b.) It will only show up on the server if I place it in the “Movies” folder. If I tell it to save the files in the folder I designated for TV it doesn’t show up in Plex at all. The TV Shows library says its empty even though I nav straight to the folder on the PC and see it all there.
c.) I’ve started the process on season 2 (with “2012”) on the end of the folder name but it is still adding it to the same “bulk” file displayed on Plex.
d.) It isn’t actually pulling the information the database information Plex says it ref’s when querying for a show.
I’m new to forums so please let me know if this discussion should remain in this thread or moved.
assuming you are talking about the Grimm TV series from 2011, the naming conventions for TV shows in TV libraries (you have to tell PLEX the library contains TV shows and not movies), is completly different.
Movies want to be called what they are called in IMDB.
TV shows prefer to be called what they are in thetvdb (most of the time)
For Grim, the folder structure should be:
Grimm/
Season 01/
Grimm - S01E01
Grimm - S01E02
…
Season 02/
Grimm - S02E02
Grimm - S02E02
…
does that make sense? You only have to put a year on the top folder and episode name if there are multiple series by that name like Poldark.
In which case it would be:
I think that makes sense. I’ll need to figure out how to break out episodes after HandBrake does its magic. In the meantime I’ll see if I can get anything to show up in the TV Shows library with that folder structure.
Thank you very much for your patience. I thought I understood naming conventions and folder structure but wow this is a whole new world.
You can skip the individual folders as long as you put the year on there. As far as I know, the year is an absolute have to have or matching is problematic.
So this is how I’m uploading them for now as I haven’t figured out how to break out the individual episodes from Handbrake yet. I tried copying the folder over to the TV Shows library. When I go into the PLEX I can see the show’s folder and then the subfolder within but passed that it says the folder is empty.
well nothing in that folder looks like a TV show to PLEX. Grimm - S01E01 tells PLEX this is season 1 episode 1 of Grimm.
Grimm Disc 1 means nothing.
You might just put it in a Video library but then you have to find yoru own artwork and name everything yourself.
I’m not a whiz with handbrake so you may have to ask someone else how to break those out when you rip them.
I’ll keep digging. Thank you very much. I think I’ve figured out how to import in a way to allow me to use the naming convention you have described. It involves using the queueing feature within HandBrake. It’s importing now. Thanks a lot for your help. This is the first time I’ve actually used a forum and I have to say I’m really impressed with the way this community has helped.
If you stumble onto such an issue again, you better separate the episodes before feeding the ripped file to Handbrake.
Depending on which software you are using, your ripped file might still contain chapter markers, which you can use to split the file.
You just need to determine which chapter numbers are at the episode boundaries and which numbers are just there to designate e.g. intro, main part, ad break, outro, and next episode preview.
