Plex merges files even after splitting apart

Server Version#: 1.16.5.1554
Player Version#:NA

I have 2 movies (Hellboy [2014] and Hellboy [2019]) that are named in the respective ways:
/Movies/Hellboy (2019)/Hellboy (2019).mkv
/Movies/Hellboy (2004).mp4

However, when I tell it to split apart, it does. When it goes to match the 2019 version again, it merges them back. I’ve tried doing it manually and end up with the same result. These aren’t the same movies and I can’t get them to stick apart.

Hellboy II_ The Golden Army

Movie named wrongly

Should be:
Hellboy II The Golden Army

And when said, STRONGLY suggest a directory for each file, that also has (YEAR) in the dir name

Yeah these are old files that I probably need to find a away to do this. I have about half my library this way.

But, it isn’t merging Hellboy II and Hellboy, just the 2 named Hellboy with the different years

Filebot could be an option for you

Go Google for that

I’ll check into that! Thanks! But I’m not sure that’s the issue here. In fact the files its merging are ones WITH dates. Sorry if Im not understanding how that would affect it. I renamed the Hellboy II file and still its doing the same thing. Its definitely thinking these movies are the same movie.

Check mp4 tags in the files then

Hello everyone.
I have similar issue with files representing different episodes of Dragon Ball Super Anime:
as you can see from this pic there are 2 different files, one for the Episode #1 and the other one for the episode #101 .

Files are all named using 3 digits as episode number:
Plex puts togheter all the couple of episode with “similar” number [ 001 - 101 ] , [ 002 - 102 ], [ 003 - 103 ] … [ 031 - 131 ].

2019-10-21_13-13-02

As you can see from the first pic I already tried to rename one fo the file putting two - ( minus ) between the name of the Series and the Name of the Episode but nothing changed.

There’s no option to split the files into 2 separate episodes.

Any suggestion? Thanks!

hello, i have the same problem, did you find a solution ?

I didn’t…i’m still wainting for support from the community

  1. Look up your show on TheTVDB
  2. Take the title as it is used on TheTVDB.
If there is something in parentheses, take that too.
If the title contains invalid characters (depends on your file system), like § : % *, simply leave them out.
  3. Check the naming and the folder structure of your show.
Name the top folder of the show exactly after the title on TheTVDB.
No abbreviations. No additional subfolders. No aliases.
Add the (year) in parentheses of when episode 1 of season 1 of this show was aired.
  4. Name the episode files according to the above linked naming guide.
Use the same title as for the top folder. Show's Title (year) - s01e01 - additional info.ext (’- additional info’ can be left out)
  5. After you corrected the naming and folder structure, perform the Plex Dance with all files for this show.

Thanks @OttoKerner, this works.
I renemed all the files adding “s01e” to the episode number and now all the episodes are correctly listed and splitted inside the Plex Library.

PS: the link to the guide about naming file you put in your post is not working.

Thanks again!

I’ve tested all 3 links and they are working.
Does this work for you? https://support.plex.tv/articles/categories/your-media/

Yes, this works.

The one you linked before lands on a 404 error page because the “real” link is

instead of

I don’t know why.
