They should be working correctly as long as your Fire TV is the latest that supports Dolby Vision, and you have a compatible display mode set in the OS.
Could you confirm you have a display mode that is dolby vision capable set in the OS Settings? If so some logs from Plex after playing some Dolby Vision content would be a big help.
I believe I have everything set correctly, and Netflix and Amazon Prime DV content played through those apps on the Fire do display correctly as DV. Iāll work on getting logs. Thanks!
Dolby Vision content on Netflix and Amazon is Profile 5 and doesnāt even have an enhancement layer, if you have files made with MakeMKV with a full enhancement layer they WILL NOT play on your 4K Firestick. The 4K Firestick will only play files with a minimal enhancement layer.
Thanks this is really good info. Is this kind of thing documented anywhere? Is it the case that this is a hardware limitation and right now only the Shield can handle this?
Yea, it seems Plex isnāt initiating that āplayer ledā portion that Sony needs. I just went and re-ripped John Wick 3 with Makemkv 1.15.3 and Plex isnāt triggering DV on my Sony X950H
I do have a separate MP4 version, made with tsmuxer, that does trigger DV, but I was hoping to just be able to make an MKV and not have to do the extra steps, to get DV. Not sure if Plex will bother with this as itās really Sonyās (IMO) poor/non-standard implementation of DV on their TVās, that is causing the issue.
The shield is supposed to support LLDV which is what your Sony needs, maybe it isnāt triggering it from profile 7 FEL files which makes sense has it doesnāt have the hardware to do that, your mp4 is probably profile 5, have you tried to convert to profile 8.1?
Hi Nex gen of hardware is here and it doesnāt support Profile 7 FEL in MKV or Transport stream either, Dolby will never knowingly support this on a media player.
The videos that do play in DV on my shield(via Plex, even before 8.8) are actually .ts files for one(I misspoke in my previous post) and are still profile 7. However, I used a special version of tsmuxer that (I think) creates a single track/dual layer profile 7 file from mkv
JW3 mkv plays in DV just fine on my setup Shield TV - Denon AVR - Bravia XF90
But Iām too have concern about proper LLDV realization on Shield.
DV on Shield is brighter and tend to clipping of very bright highlights in compare with UBP-X700
What movie is the MKV made from? Wondering it itās specific to the movie. Iāll try ripping one of the Matrix Trilogy movies again with MakeMKV 1.15.3 and see what happens but John Wick 3 is a no go.
For reference, I am going Shield Pro 2019 -> Denon X3300 -> Sony X950H.
Ok, The Matrix Reloaded DID trigger DV on my Sony X950H, straight from the MKV rip. So it looks to be something specific with John Wick 3.
What is needed to show info about it and track down why it isnāt triggering DV?
EDIT
Now Iām confused. I put the MKV of John Wick 3 back into my library and now it IS triggering DV from the MKV. I have no idea what changed. The Shield app is still the same version and my server is still the same. Really strange. Iāll have to monitor things.
EDIT 2
It seems to be very inconsistent. After force closing the Plex app, when I tried a DV MKV, just using the normal option, it didnāt even play the 4K version(I have a non 4k version for other TVās) as the display was on Standard and the Brightness was still on 33.
So I force closed it again, this time I went and selected to play a specific version(4K) and while it played in HDR(brightness went to max), it did NOT trigger DV. So I backed out of the movie back to the info screen again, then selected the specific 4K version again and this time it DID trigger DV. Then I went back and just chose the option to resume button(not the play a specific version option) and it was now playing the right version and triggering DV fine
So something isnāt right after a restart/force close with the app initially. But after it figures things out, as long as the app isnāt fully restarted via a reboot or force close, it seems fine.
Weāve been working with NVIDIA and have found the cause of a crash which would cause Dolby Vision files to fail to direct play and fallback to a direct stream which only supports HDR10. The fix will be released in the next SHIELD OS update (8.2.1).
Do you have a sample for the colour problem? Iāve tried the batch I have (mostly from this thread) and the files all seem to be playing with the correct colours on 8.2.1 of the SHIELD OS.
