Newest Beta Dolby Vision Issue

The issue presented specifically is errors with EAC3 with a bitrate of 1536kbps otherwise everything else (including all lossless codecs and DV) are playing nicely.

While this error is for a niche user it is none the less a bug that has not be fixed and points to an error in Plex’s Easy Audio Encoder while in Emby said files play fine.

Fixed by using Emby’s beta APK. Guess I’ll switch platforms since Plex can’t seem to figure it out.

I want to report sudden buffering issues when playing DV content. I noticed this problem only since some weeks or 1-2 months…
There are no obvious connectivity problems regarding my network.
Here are the details regarding my bug report:

I confess I haven’t read the entire thread so hopefully I’m not repeating things but these are my findings. Using a Shield 2019 tube playing back 4k UHD HDR with and without DV I’ve experienced stuttering and dropouts. Navigation becomes impossible and the Plex app may crash and restart. By disabling DV in the Shield menu all of these problems go away. This obviously means not being able to playback in DV which is the goal but with the current version of the app 8.11.0.22186 even non DV titles such as Tenet were unplayable without turning off DV on the shield.

EDIT - scratch all that. Playback is improved but there are still issues.

not including DV, the tube has it’s own set of issues, ostensibly due to having less ram than the shield pro. (tube = 2gig, pro = 3gig)

Some tv’s you must manually set the display mode in the shield settings to a DV compatible mode (ie 29.97 DV mode).

some/many tvs have limited display modes for DV.

Rumour has it that if you install a very fast microSD card on the Tube as internal storage and move the Plex app onto that SD card, it solves those issues.

Sure, I can.

Sony 950H (75" - if it matters)
Native plex client - current release
Plex server - beta build - latest - Linux (Ubuntu with NAS)
4K Dolby Vision test discs: Back to the Future, Jaws, Lord of the Rings
Backup to .mkv using 1.15.3 and 1.15.4 (tried both)

The only movie Plex will display Dolby Vision is the Lord of the Rings. Jaws and Back to the Future do not play.

Nothing worked at first but I noticed that TrueHD was set for audio. I changed it and suddenly Lord of the Rings had a Dolby Vision option. I then reset it back to TrueHD and the option is gone. So seemed related. I fired up Jaws, nothing. Change audio, nothing. Try Back to the Future. Same thing, nothing.

I also have a 2019 Shield Pro. It is connected to my Yamaha 677 receiver (older) and its output goes to the Sony’s eARC. Fire up the Shields plex client, again current version, nothing. In this case no movies work such as LoTR. I check the Shields display options and there is no HDR or DV option. My guess is my receiver isn’t able to pass through or I have it set up. So back to the Sony set I go.

Reading and posting some media info information it was suggested that in this case LoTR is using MEL while Back to the Future is FEL. Seems about right. I have a few other MEL movies so going to try those later tonight and see how it goes.

If the other MEL copies play then I can say without a doubt this TV set, plex client, can only play MEL copies. I’m not sure I buy this though because I tried Godzilla King of Monsters and it says it is MEL. When I played that DV was not visible. I will with Matrix later tonight.

I installed the Shield Experience 8.2.2 today.

First tests of DV films were positive. 13 Hours, Gladiator, Ip Man 1, Ip Man 2, Red Heat all worked first time.

Then I tried the ‘dog’, Days of Thunder - fail, as it always has. Next up was MI1, MI2, MI3 - all failures.

After that, the films that had worked, stopped working.

Where oh where are we this issue? There haven’t been any updates from Plex for ages now. Is Nvidia still working on their DV decoder?

Please???

Red push issue is still there in 8.2.2.

I thought the red push issue was also happening on Netflix too? Haven’t used Netflix on the shield myself but from reading on nvidia forums I think that was reported.

P7 converted to P8 also affected. Both in Player-led (LLDV) and TV-led modes…
P5 is in different colorspace - IPTPQc2/IPT. Maybe it’s a reason why P5 is unaffected by redpush

I hate to bear bummers, but I think we’re barking up the wrong tree if we think this is limited to the nvidia decoder. Because I’m also seeing the issue (initial playback fails, apparently due to initiating audio, so it falls back to transcoding, which disabled Dolby Vision) on the newest Plex client for both my nvidia Shield 2019 as well as my Apple TV 4K.

I can usually get Dolby Vision working by changing the audio stream out of a lossless type and choosing AC3, and then I can even often switch back to lossless and Dolby Vision (via DirectPlay) will then work.

But, again, this is happening on both Plex for Apple TV as well as Shield (2019).

Best Regards,

B

I have been trying to research this issue for days now, and this is the best thread I can find on the subject, but without reading all of the 400+ comments (I must have read almost 100), I am just trying to get caught up on the situation and understand if my issue is the same.

I had a tube, but just upgraded to the Pro as I didn’t realize the tube has high bitrate playback issues. Well, got the shinny Pro in the mail, and I still have issues - just, different issues.

Some of the content I am watching its MKV Dolby Vision/Atmos, that has all been 100% fine. Some of it is DV/Atmos MP4, some of those work great, some of them are a horrible mess and I have absolutely no idea why or what is causing this. I get an error saying my network speed is not sufficient or something to that affect which is not at all the case. Everything in my setup is more than capable of this, the content in question is literally less then half the bitrate of other MKV files, so its seemingly a MP4 issue, specific to things that are both DV and Atmos (I think?). I am on the latest public Shield Pro Android TV software and latest public Plex client and server (server is on Ubuntu). Is there a solution to this in the works, I read Emby may do this better, is there some setting I may have wrong? It enables DV on my TV (TCL), but after a 30 seconds to a minute it just starts to buffer and stuffer and sometimes pops up the network warning.

I have the same issue.

Can we please have an update on what on earth is happening with fixing this issue?

@DaveBinM @sixones

It has been ages since there has been official comment from Plex!

HiSense 50H8G Plex App version 8.16.0.24423
Unable to DirectPlay
LG: Dolby Vision Comparison UHD 4K Demo | 4K Media
TivoStream 4K works fine, same content, same server, HDMI-connected to the same TV vs the built-in Android TV app.

I have tried to remux the content to .mp4 and .ts and still have the same error, the Plex client decides it cannot DirectPlay the content and requests a transcode.

I previously reported this in the SmartTV app thread and was redirected here by @anon18523487

The content plays fine on the TV when loaded on a USB drive and played directly in Android TV.
