Newest Beta Dolby Vision Issue

I see the client is out of beta now. I tested all my DV rips and they all worked properly first time.

Looks as though you nailed it, Plex, nice one!

@Orange_GT3 Where are you seeing that? I have the latest beta installed 8.8.0.21167 which was released on 17th October. The official non beta release in google play is 6th October. Where are you seeing a more updated version?

Tested the new update. Still more of the same as 21167.

When I get DV playback, seems there are two ‘modes’. One is brighter than the other. And the dimmer one looks very dark. Not even HDR lvl, with Dynamic Tone Mapping off and everything Dynamic off.

My DV MP4 I created using DV MP4muxer method in makemkv forums, when direct played on the TV (I have an LG C9), still looks way brighter than the DV MKV on the Shield.

Summary of my findings:
1.) DV MP4 direct play vs. DV MKV Shield / Plex – DV MP4 looks a lot better and seems to be the legit one
2.) DV MP4 direct play vs HDR10 MKV direct play with Dynamic Tone Mapping On and everything Dynamic on high – DV MP4 still looks better (and more natural imo) but not by a lot now, subtle difference
3.) DV MKV Shield / Plex vs HDR10 MKV Shield / Plex (same file and setting as above) – HDR10 looks better
4.) DV MKV Shield / Plex vs HDR10 Mkv Shield / Plex Dynamic off everything – looks about the same

Is this Plex’s problem or my Shield’s?

EDIT: It seems it’s as sjpotter said. It’s the Shield’s. I tested Our Planet on Netflix with my TV and the Shield, and I can see the same issues aforementioned. TV playback is brighter and better than the Shield’s. Could it be that my Shield is faulty?

I’m still getting a few movies triggering Dolby vision but only get a black screen.

Plex 8.8.0 is awesome!
I have tried all these MKV demo files. ALL of them can trigger DoVi.
DoVi P4/P5/P7/P8 are supported by shield tv.

I use shield tv pro 2019 + sony Z9F(ZF9).

Does one of these MKVs are dual layer DV ?

I just want to understand if Plex 8.8.0 fix the dual layer DV or if it will never be possible !
(Or if dual layer is a thing of the past, I’m not up to date on this)

Thank you

I too would like to know this. To everyone: please, is every file mentioned here with working single-track DV?

I don’t know how PLEX is actually handling the DV, but Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is listed as a FEL (12-bit, dual layer) disc in a forum on Blu-ray.com. The mkv file info (MakeMKV 1.15.3) within PLEX clearly shows DV profile 6 and profile 7. It plays just fine and triggers the DV badge icon on my Vizio P-series Quantum X (2019.). It’s noticeably different from the HDR10 presentation.

So, I don’t know about mp4’s that everyone tried remuxing over the past year, but with MakeMKV 1.15.3 the files seem just fine.

I wanted to report performance on a non Dolby vision tv, the sample files linked above

  • p4 lg dv - no hdr, colors looked good though
  • p5 Dolby amaze - no hdr, colors all jacked up, trees were red instead of green
  • p7 fel - hdr detected - colors good
  • p7 Mel - hdr detected - colors good
  • p81 glass - crashed several times, but then finally played in hdr, good colors

Shield tv 2019 can handle with Single Track Dual layer DoVi Profile 7. This type can be produced by makemkv V1.15.3.

The original m2ts file from UHD Bluray Disk is Dual Track Dual Layer, this type can not be played by Plex on shield tv.

May be you are confused with Track and Layer, go to makemkv forum, look at this looooong thread.

Awesome. Thanks. Is there any way as of today to convert a dual track DV MKV to single track?

You could try opening the existing MKV with MakeMKV 1.15.3 and then recreate the MKV, as you would from a disc.

Version 1.15.3 includes the ability to ‘fix’ bad DV metadata.

guys, this is a video sample captured by iPhone 12 pro, it is DoVi profile 8.4.

CAN trigger DoVi using PLEX on Shield TV 2019.

AWESOME!

Then its good that its not in beta anymore

He just wrote me privately asking for places to get movies!

Dont get why people dont BUY their movies and support the industry! Else we just dont get new movies made or simply get lower budget movies!

Did the same to me this morning, as well as liking a bunch of my comments. I removed myself from the PM and didn’t answer. Don’t feed the troll.

Actually in my case what I had to to was mount the ISO from the BDMV folder structure again and then open it on MakeMKV. Then DV worked.

MKV (with 2 video tracks, one being DV) to MKV didn’t work.
M2TS (also dual track) (inside the BDVM/stream folder) to MKV also didn’t work.

Thanks anyway!

So do we know what exactly is the deal with why DV finally works if you just keep stopping and starting the movie again? Some movies are more stubborn than others, but I assume this is a solvable issue in the Plex software otherwise why would it work at all?
