Newest version of Plex Media Player broke something on 23.976fps playback

Really? That’s interesting. Never thought that this is something working.

Hard to say since we don’t have direct communications with vlang any longer. He would have been able to tell us the difference between the current version of mpv plex uses and any new version. He was the lead developer of mpv but unfortunately is no longer with Plex.

Yep! In the .conf file you can configure it for audio drop (adrop) or video drop (vdrop) to keep the audio and video in sync. For 23.976 content it is the only way that I can prevent the audio and video drifting out of sync during a film.

I use Display mode: audio and passthrough. Never have an issue with lip sync using embedded on a NUC5i7RYH. Has worked flawlessly for me in this regards since 2015.

Good for you! I can’t use embedded as I have a number of other applications that run from my WIndows 10 HTPC.

Oh, that sounds really bad.
In the logs of the embedded platform, you can search for “mpv” and there is a version mentioned v0.26 and that is a bit old. (also in windows10 of course, but there is no build number just 53a7eec)
But is there any chance that we get a newer version of mpv in pmp in the future?

At this point, I have litte hope of seeing embedded updated. The nightly build you found is mostly UI changes. There has not been too much work on playback engine from what I have seen. Updates to mpv for macOS and Windows are also tied to the same—which you have already stated is quite behind what has been released by the mpv devs.

Never thought that a sync mode is applicable on the player with passthrough enabled. (As a bitstream cannot be altered. For PCM its possible)

I believe the OP is using video drop which is a hidden option. As you stated you can not alter the audio bitstream unless mpv decodes it and sends it out as multichannel LPCM.

Thanks for the answer!
That’s quite unfortunate. But UI changes are also important.
Hopefully it gets updated somewere in the future.

It also works as audio drop (adrop) but I could hear occassional popping when the audio was dropped, with v drop I don’t really notice any dropped video frames, perhaps one or two but nothing that is a show stopper. I would rather than that have the lip sync constantly drifting.

Nice, I will try some of these options vdrop/adrop

To be fair, I find PMP for Windows to be troublesome on Haswell, Broadwell, Skylake, and Kaby Lake NUCs. There are definitely issues with the player portion of PMP for Windows. Its just not getting the love that it needs and who knows if it ever will…

I have also recreated the OPs issue on Windows 7 with a GTX1080 and shared with the Plex devs months ago.

:open_mouth: Would be nice to know why.
As the flagship player of Plex it should get some love

That was my argument. :man_shrugging:

 I just wanted to point it out once again.

Is it still considered the flag ship player?

In my opinion yes, definitely!
(because of so many options you could change to get perfect playback, it uses a very powerful player engine, …okay, no HDR passthrough but powerful!.. )

I ask due to comments in this thread and what Achilles just recently said.

I’m partial to the Shield TV as it just more or less works and is easy to get other apps for as well which I think is important outside Plex use which you don’t get with PMP.
