HI,
PMS, Shield TV, iOS, not getting/showing the chapter selections when adding new movies. The issue seems to be about a week old since the latest PMS updates. My other titles are fine; chapters remain, it’s just new the titles. My process is no different for both mkv and mp4. Checked the titles in VLC, chapters are there.
Is this a known bug? Wait it out for the fix or does anyone have any suggestions I can try. I’m like five years into Plex and doing nothing different (head scratching)!
Thanks
Chris

Thanks, @trumpy81. Have had those settings in place since like forever. No dice though. Since posting I am discovering a few titles eventually make the chapters available, many others not though and they were loaded several days ago.
If this is an indexing/task/timing issue, something I never experienced before, (was always instant), then something has changed somewhere. Can’t work out what though!
Often do the Plex Dance too. I did again with one offending file. It loads, and PMS shows me it’s generating video thumbnails… when the process completes, I go to play the file and no chapters are available! It’s a strange one this. Later today I will roll back to a previous PMS version and work up and see if this offers up anything.
Cheers, Chris.
Absolutely I checked before replying
Set: as a scheduled task and when media is added
Server last shut down 3 days ago when I updated to latest PMS. Shutting down the server, test again, Plex Dance again if necessary if issue remains I will then start the roll back to previous versions as a test. Cheers
Boy, ha, nearing 50. Keep calling me boy, I like it
I am having the same issue after I updated to Version 1.15.2.793. Chapter thumbnails as well as thumbnails for extras are not being created for any movies that have been added after I performed the update.
Maintenance - I checked and the nightly maintenance did successfully complete after I added 3 new movies (thumbnails were not created for all 3 new movies).
“Generate chapter thumbnails” setting. I verified that this is set to “as a scheduled task”.
I have a pretty generic configuration. My PMS is a Windows 10 NUC that is not running any other applications. It is connected to a Synology DS1817+.
I have the issue on the following clients: iOS (iPad), Android (Shield) and Chrome browser.
Before the upgrade to Version 1.15.2.793 I never had a problem.
Thanks for your help!
Hi @trumpy81. I rolled back to version PlexMediaServer-1.15.2.793-782228f99-x86_64.qpkg and the chapter issue has gone.

Scrub my last comment, sorry! I rolled back several previous versions, problem remains. It’s intermittent! I guess this must be a local issue, can’t think why though. Appreciate this could be a hard one to support from afar. Happy to try any suggestions. Certainly a strange one this!
I think there is something more going on than just a local problem. I am seeing the same problems after upgrading to 1.15.2.793. New additions to the library are not having chapter thumbnails created so no chapter behavior during playback. Here’s what i did to convince myself:
- new file with chapters added to library - no chapter behavior in web player, mac player, ipad player.
- Plex Dance
- still no chapter behavior
- stop plexmediaserver
- downgrade to version 1.15.1.710
- removed newly added file and repeated same process i normally use to add files to plex library directories
- still no chapter behavior
- Plex Dance
- Success - chapter thumbnails and behavior (immediately available upon the files being scanned into the libaray, apps were able to use chapters controls)
- reapplied upgrade to 1.15.2.793
- chapter behavior stopped
- Plex Dance
- chapter behavior still not returned.
The only thing i don’t quite understand is why chapter behavior remains consistently available from the 1.15.1.710 to 1.15.2.793 upgrade for older files that have been in the directory for awhile but for the newly added files it stops working upon the upgrade.
I did confirm my Generate Chpater thumbnails
setting is set to
as a scheduled task and when media is added
The only thing that seems to make sense of the combined set of observations is that the 1.15.2.793 version is not acting on the ..when media is added
portion of the setting, or there is some other database problem that doesn’t seem to have affected anything until now. I can check in the morning to see if the chapter thumbnails and chapter behavior appear after a few hours.
Ok. So I removed the files with chapter issues then performed the Plex Dance.
Stopped PMS and copied/pasted my entire database folder (> $PLEX_HOME/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-in Support/Databases/ ), to my iMac. Then deleted the database on my NAS and copied it back over.
Rolled PMS back to version PlexMediaServer-1.15.1.780
Added my files back and scanned files.
All files now showing chapters.
Continued to play around, chapter issue returns with version PlexMediaServer-1.15.2.793
Rolled back PMS 1.15.1.780 again, added more files, total 40+ now and chapter issues not returning.
Hope this helps!
Cheers
yep - seems like we have the same symptoms. Nearly 24 hours later and the new library additions’ chapter info still not picked up by Plex in 1.15.2.793
I am have the same issue since I updated. (using a synology nas Version 1.15.2.793)

I started experiencing this issue as well since the last PMS update.
I also thought I would share what may or may not be a helpful observation. I upgraded one of my movies (which had chapters intact) from a DVD source to Blu-ray. After replacing the DVD file in my Plex library with the Blu-ray using same folder and filename, after selecting “Scan Library Files” to update, the new Blu-ray movie still shows the chapters. (But again, any new movie I add to my library will not show the chapters.)
Maybe obvious to you Plex veterans, but thought it couldn’t hurt to add to the discussion (from a relative Plex newbie such as myself).
sorry @trumpy81 - i failed to notice your ask for my logs - if they will still help, any in particular? or all?
I too am having the same issue. I hope it gets worked out soon.
Same issue after updating to the 1.15.2.793 version although mine is with a Synology NAS and Roku 4. I found this posting on a search. Let me know if I need to post in one of those topics. Thanks.
After not seeing any progress made by the Plex folks on this issue, I decided to downgrade my version of Plex. I went from version 1.15.2.793 to version 1.15.1.791. Chapters and extras thumbnails now work. I will just wait to upgrade until Plex fixes the issue.
BTW, the moving to an older version of Plex is very straightforward. Kudos to the Plex engineers for making that process easy.
Same issue here. Thought I was going crazy. Looks like I’m going to roll back. Hopefully they fix this. Kind of ridiculous as this is a fairly basic and high visibility feature to break in an update.
I had to go back to 1.15.1.791. Issue started in 1.15.2.793.
Rolling back to 791 and Plex Dancing all the files since the issue started got chapters and extra thumbnails back.
Hello, I installed the 1.15.3.835 version on my Synology and still have the missing chapters issue. I removed the movie file, did another scan of the library files so it would disappear, placed it back on the NAS and scanned again and tested.
Let me know if there is another way I should be testing.
