No audio from MP4 without transcoding. Why?

I have an MP4 video file, that on the ATV the video plays but there is no audio. This is the case whether I play it via Home Sharing or through Plexconnect. If I force transcoding via the Plexconnect settings, the audio does play. My question: Does anyone know why this is the case and is there anyway to get the audio to play without forcing transcoding?

 

Here is what I know about the audio stream in the file:

 

The maker says Audio 1: English | 128 Kbps | 2ch | AAC

 

According to VLC media information:

 

Codec:  MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a)

Channels:  Stereo

Sample Rate: 48000 Hz

 

This is the video info:

 

Codec: H264—MPEG—4 AVC (part10) (avc1)

Resolution: 1920 X 794

Frame rate: 23.976
