Hi,
I have a Raspberry Pi Zero with Rasplex 1.0.3 installed on it and it works perfectly. However, whenever I connect my Pi to the TV via HDMI and from the TV to the Home Theater via an Optical Cable, I don’t hear any audio.
All settings are correctly configured in both the TV and Home Theater and I used the Rasplex Audio Guide to configure Rasplex Settings, and I also played with different options to see whether it worked, but it didn’t.
I do get audio from the TV speakers, just not from the home theater setup. Also, is it possible to get 5.1 channel audio using the above method? My TV states that IT can decode DD 5.1 Audio and my HT has both DTS and DD logos on it.
FYI, both my TV and Home Theater are from the early 2010s and both of them are discontinued and both of them do not have ARC HDMI capabilities.
The models are,
TV: LG 42LD420
HT: Samsung HT-C455(N)
Thank you in advance, hoping to watch some movies using the HT soon!
Without an audio return channel this is unlikely to work. Can you connect the RPi to the Home Theatre via HDMI and then from the Home Theatre to the TV via HDMI Out?
Valdhor,
Unfortunately my HT cannot do this since it has no HDMI IN. But aren’t there any settings which I can configure for this to work via an optical cable? I even heard that some LG TVs allow 5.1 DD “passthrough”, but my manual does not say anything about it. But even without the need for DD, I atleast need 2 channel stereo audio, since I cannot hear absolutely anything. Any thoughts?
Thanks.
I usually play audio when watching normal TV through the TV speakers and only came across the optical connection when using Rasplex to get good audio.
The HT is set to the D.IN mode.
And I have tried disabling the TV speakers (what the manual told) to see whether it works but it doesn’t.
I have reset the audio settings but still no audio.
Something I have discovered is that even when the HT is connected via Optical to the TV and also when that link is removed, I still get the same results using tvservice -a, so that must mean that the either Rasplex or the TV doesn’t recognize the HT?
Results:
PCM supported: Max channels: 2, Max samplerate: 48kHz, Max samplesize 24 bits.
AC3 supported: Max channels: 6, Max samplerate: 48kHz, Max rate 640 kb/s.

Also I ordered another optical cable just in case something is wrong with the current one. (It’s working I guess since I see light from the other end.)
Does Rasplex give you sound on your TV when the TV speakers are enabled? If so then Rasplex is not the issue. Have you tried playing the TV with TV speakers off and D.IN selected on the HT system? Do you get sound, if not then the issue is between your TV output and HT input, don’t think it will be a cable fault as optical cables are fairly robust.
So just today my new optical cable arrived and guess what? I’m actually getting 5.1 surround sound via my TV, so there’s nothing wrong with the TV and HT or Rasplex, it was the cable!
It’s cool to see that my old TV can output 5.1 audio from optical out when the source is HDMI.
