No audio on Blu Ray rips

Having a problem playing Blu Ray rips on Plex on Nvidia Shield.

Video plays perfectly, but there’s no sound. Nvidia Shield connected to Pioneer 5.1 surround sound receiver, passing to Samsung TV ARC port.

Sound is fine on all other connected devices, and on SD rips on the same Plex server. Nvidia system sounds also playing fine.

Can only assume it is a setting somewhere that is causing something on Blu Ray rips to go awry when attempting to play through my setup, but I can’t work out what I need to tweak.

Does anyone have any advice?

Could it be you’ve configured your Plex client to pass through the audio and your TV/Pioneer aren’t supporting that particular audio format? Some TVs will only pass on specific codecs via their ARC port.

Definitely sounds possible. Is that something I need to fix in Plex or on the Shield?

That depends…
I suppose you should be able to disable the pass-through option inside Plex.
I guess you cannot change how your TV deals with the media (e.g .what formats it’ll pass on via ARC).
Not sure about the receiver but I guess it’ll be same as for the TV.

TL;DR: 1st try disabling pass-through in the Plex client; keep in mind that might result in additional transcoding of audio tracks if Plex thinks the client cannot direct-play a format.

Thanks, I’ll give that a try.

What model Pioneer receiver? Just curious what audio formats it does / does not support.

You can disable specific audio formats in the Nvidia Shield audio settings. Plex should then transcode the disabled formats to a supported format. In the Plex app, set Passthrough = HDMI.

Note that disabling the audio formats in the Shield settings disables them for all apps, not just Plex.

It’s a Pioneer VSX-234.

Trying to play unsupported codecs definitely sounds like it would be the problem, I’ll try disabling some in the Shield and see if that fixes it.

That fixed it. I turned off all the supported formats on the Shield and let Plex do the audio processing and everything is working again, thanks for your help.

Supported or unsupported?

Leave the supported formats enabled. The Shield will then pass them to the receiver.

Disable the unsupported formats. They will then be transcoded by Plex Media Server to a supported format.

You can monitor playback via Plex Dashboard → Now Playing + Expanded View. It will show you if the audio is direct playing, direct streaming, or transcoding.

I could not find any info online, so can’t help with supported/unsupported audio formats.
