Nvidia Shield Plex App playing stereo audio instead of surround sound

Hello, is there any known issues with the current version of the Plex app for nvidia shield? I am encountering two issues lately of which both are driving me crazy.

  1. Audio play back - i have been noticing with DTS-HD and PCM 5.1 audio, even though the app reports direct play i am getting stereo audio from the home theater system.
I play the same movie back using Plex for Kodi on the same shield and the audio plays correctly, so this is no doubt an app issue and not home theater or connection problems. I did try to adjust a few settings in the Nvidia shield but none had any positive or negative effects. I did update to the lasteest version which seems to have helped with some movies, but others no change so i dont know what else to check.
  2. the plex app randomly hangs on starting a movie or tv show. I select something and i get a yellow spinning circle for varying lengths of time. Sometimes minutes. I close the app and try again, sometimes multiple times. This happens with everything from standard def files to UHD, doesn’t seem to matter and there is no discernible pattern as too when it occurs.

Ensure you have HDMI pass through enabled in settings

Re: spinner that’s a ongoing issue with android / nvidia shield client. Frustrating I know!

Thanks but HDMI pass through us enabled. It works for some movies and not others and Kodi plays it as expected, I just don’t like that interface as much but guess I’ll be using it for the time being.

The shield also has some pcm 5.1 upmix and dolby processing on my shield i have both those options disabled.

also I figured out that disabling “refresh rate” matching helped with my movie start issues so far (just a day and no hangs so far). I haven’t noticed any by products of not using refresh rate matching. I suspect the shield does some decent magic to prevent tearing and interpolates the frames accurately.

Thanks, I’ll check the refresh rate settings to see if that helps the start up.
I have the 5.1 up mix disabled already.
I do have dolby processing enabled for the videos that have dolby as their audio. I can try turning it off though to see what happens.

Going ask something odd here but are you on hardline ethernet or wifi with the shield?

Hardwire, I try not to use wi-fi unless i have no other option.

Been having the same issue since the Shield Experience 9 update, Plex seems to not recognise when certain formats need to be transcoded.

My receiver only supports AC3, no DTS or any of the likes. Usually Plex is smart enough to identify this and transcode any audio back down to AC3, but since the update I can see from tautulli that Plex is just direct-playing the audio instead of transcoding. Movies in AC3 play fine through surround.

My setup is Shield > HDMI to TV> Optical to Receiver. I’ve tried enabling and disbaling both HDMI and Optical passthrough in Plex settings, enabling and disabling dolby processing in Shield settings, even removed, restarted and reinstalled the Plex app.

Seems like for whatever reason, since the update, Plex is not recognising that I need AC3 and is handing me direct-play audio instead.

I’ve had to substitute the beautiful Plex app for Kodi with Plex addon, which I’m not enjoying at all. Really hoping this issue can be identified and resolved.

Im puzzled why people even use optical anymore. Its such a legacy connection and does not support the throughput for high bandwitch audio like HDMI. I understand its purpose for connecting older equipment but its 2022. Use HDMI or CAT5+ or higher.

Im also puzzled why people still connect devices to their TV’s and then Optical, ARC/eARC the audio to the receiver. Eccentially using the TV as a reciever/router, that logic makes no sense to me. A TV is not either of those no matter how expense or fancy it is. The whole point of an a/v receive is to take information and then send it out to its respective devices. Its the network router of the audio work. Its not the 80’s anymore.

Anyway, i recommend rewiring everything you have set up as follows. Shield to Receiver to TV. Turn on all throughput options and let the shield communicate with the receiver and determine the correct audio track. Plex should then be able to let your DTS passthrough regaurdless of compatibility. Most likely will convert to PCM. But none the less it will handle it.

I agree with everything you’ve said my friend, unfortunately I am poor.

A new receiver that meets the specifications is not on the horizon anytime soon - most of the content I consume is 4kHDR and while my receiver does have HDMI ports, they only support 1080p video.
While I cannot wait to get myself a top spec receiver that supports all codecs and the latest HDMI passthrough, In my opinion, not worth the sacrifice when I know that software can and should alleviate my audio downfalls in the meantime.

Audio transcoding with my setup did work automatically before the update so I’m hoping to raise awareness so this gets fixed for me and all my other ghetto setup homies out there

I understand the budget thing. Lol that you called it a “ghetto setup”, ive def been there myself. Just found it interesting that you have it set that way. Keep in mind that low and mid ranger receives can be had on the secondary market for a good price. Even the budget friendly ones have top ends specs to support 4k, dts, and atmos. Anywhere from $300-500.

Well I’m glad I’m not alone with this issue. I’m also of the mindset that my older TV and Sonos is older but still very functional and I see no real reason to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars just because Plex breaks the functionality of their app with updates.

I’m also having the problem where Plex is set to optical pass through-AC3 but seems to be ignoring this and direct streaming other audio which is then converted to stereo.

My setup is:
Plex on Nvidia Shield Tv-HDMI to TV-optical to Sonos Playbar with play 1’s and Sub

Looks like the new shield experience update has resolved the issue for me lads, Plex is now correctly transcoding DTS, trueHD etc. into AC3 as needed.

Hoping it works for you fellas too!
