OK this issue has come up numerous times over the years and I have not seen an ACTUAL fix or an actual response from Plex. I have Plex Media Server loaded onto a Mac mini I keep running full time in my media cabinet and hardwired into my home network. I use a 2019 Nvidia Shield TV Pro for basically all my tv watching, whether streaming or accessing my local Plex library. Shield is also hardwired to local network, and then HDMI with allllllll of the max quality and passthrough settings checked from Shield to my brand new Denon S760 AVR, with CEC and passthrough and all that enabled, out to a 3.1 ELAC speaker setup. Every single point of the system as a whole is fine tuned and working perfectly, gone over that relentlessly. When playing the Youtube app on the Shield, the sound is more or less flawless, dialogue sounds great, etc. Every other app on the Nvidia Shield, connected the same way and running through the exact same components and processing, all sound great. The digital video files in question when played straight from the computer or through my Apple TV 4K (which I don’t use regularly because no support for TrueHD Atmos) sound better. The issue, as very BEST as I can isolate it, ONLY exists within the Plex app on Nvidia Shield. I have also played around with all the settings in my AVR to fine tune and customize the crossover/power/processing etc. Everything sounds great. But the Plex audio is garbage. I will be watching Youtube at Volum 49-51’ish, then switch over to Plex and start playing a file, whether an episode of The Office or some big production Hollywood action and I still will have to crank the audio up to freaking 75 or so just to hear the dialogue, and then when the action scenes get going it blows my neighbors out and I have to turn it back down, and then when the scene ends I can’t hear anything again. What in the actual world is Plex on Nvidia Shield doing to my multi-channel audio. I do not want either Plex or the Shield to do ANYTHING with either AV signal except pass it my Denon AVR for processing, but through all this diagnostic testing it very clearly is one or the other with the Plex app being the most likely. None of this “disabling Dolby Processing” or “turn the audio setting to Huge” does ANYTHING. This is a MUCH more fundamental issue and I am seriously in need of an ACTUAL fix for this. WHAT in the world is going on? There are no real solutions I’ve seen.
TL;DR I have a Plex Media Server on Mac mini. Nvidia Shield TV Pro. Both are hardwired to local network. HDMI “passthrough” direct to Denon S760 AVR. All the settings have been checked within the Plex server, Plex Player, Nvidia Shield, and AVR, and the dialogue audio is absolute quiet garbage coming from anything thrown from the Plex app on the Shield.
