No .mkv files showing up at all

Hello,

after doing a bit of research I decided I needed Plex, so I made an account and bought the app on Android.

However, when I went to watch a show, the android app told me the folder was empty. It turns out it doesn't show any .mkv files, but .mp4 files show up just fine. How is this possible? Other people seem to be able to watch .mkv's just fine. The whole reason I bought the app was so that I could also watch .mkv's, but now I can't :/

Is there any way to fix this? Any help is greatly appreciated.

it has nothing to do with the file type but how the files are named.

how are the files that are not showing up named?

if they are tv show files  in a tv library they need the S01E01 type notation for it to work else they are ignored. Some other similar notations work but not all.

if they are in a movie library then then must not have that notation

Plex can support mkv files so that should not be the reason you don't see the files.  How did you set up your libraries?  Did you follow the naming convention?  Do you see the mkv files on your PMS machine?

Huh, I'm stupid for not looking into that. I figured I'd just dump my entire Movie/Tv show folder in movies. I'll fix that now and report back.

I had TV shows (from a cable channel) in my movies folder, with with the sYYeXX season/episode notation. I changed it to s-YY.e-XX and it shows up perfectly.

May I just say this is the DUMBEST requirement, like EVER? Seriously, who CARES what they’re named??

Um. Plex is trying to match the episode with an online metadata source. If not named correctly, how can plex know what episode is each file.

This format: s-YY.e-XX, worked for me, however the documentation tells you to use the other sYYeXX. It is a nice gesture from plex trying to match our videos with a Database, but if it is not found, why hide them from the user. That is not a very good decision. They could display some information saying the file could not be matched up, but hiding it? Wrong…

Plex will try to guess the season and episodes even if you don’t follow the guide. This may work in some cases but it’s not guaranteed. The files are not hidden. They probably got merged with other episodes since Plex couldn’t identify the individual episodes. Using Plex Web go into the library where the files should be. Then set the filter to duplicates. This will identify any merged files. Check and see if your hidden files are in this group.

This works, weirdly enough. It’s a bit annoying really to rename all my files this way, but it’s something

filebot is really good for batch renaming. ( it is free on everything but OS X ) http://www.filebot.net/

to be clear the naming sYYeXX is fine. probably just a hiccup when getting metadata and bad metadata gets cached or thougth was a duplicate like moviefan mentions. renaming it to anything sometimes makes it think it is a new file and grabs things fresh again

SOLUTION:

  1. Select HOME
  2. LIBRARIES > Movies
  3. Press Cogwheel in right corner (Settings)
  4. Select Edit Library
  5. Select Advanced
  6. Switch Scanner from Plex Movie Scanner TO Plex Video Files Scanner
  7. Save Changes and it will scan all files in your library folder, including MKV.
  8. Enjoy Plex

This fixed it for me too. The dashes and period must be there: Nameoftheshow_S-01.E-02.mkv

Would be nice if there was a notice somewhere when using Plex. Its not until I stumbled on this that I finally figured out the issue, after thinking it was faulty software.

Do you mean besides the excellent FAQ pages that explain how to configure and use Plex?

dashes and periods do not need to be in filenames

The FAQs are excellent and very clear, but I think that it would be useful to pop up a very large warning when creating a library to inform user that they have to read the FAQ and follow the naming conventions. Not everyone (including me) did it at the beginning and as Plex is becoming more and more mainstream it would be useful.

Yep, that’s fine but the wording could be more “direct” ;D I know you have to read the full sentence but starting with “Help us out” makes me think I have to do something for Plex (as a company, as a community, as… I don’t know). “Help Plex recognize your media by following the naming conventions” or something like “Plex will recognize files based on their name, follow the guide for best results” would be more straightforward.

Oh and make it so large to the point of being annoying

OK, I’m really pounding my head here - I moved some TV show folders that Plex local found, indexed, and played over to my OneDrive\Plex folder for PlexCloud - where there are Music and Movie folders that PlexCloud finds and shows content for - and PlexCloud claims ‘there are no items in this library’ for TV shows.

I’ve verified that the files are synced up to OneDrive, but PlexCloud refuses to see them.

Grrr…
