X files hidden!

Hi there. I had 4 seasons of Divx files, named as follows:
v shows\x-files\x-filesS01E01.avi
v shows\x-files\x-filesS01E02.avi

Everything was perfect. 4 seasons listed in Plex, with 24 episodes in each season folder. However, the quality was dreadful so I bought the blu rays and ripped them, and used the .mkv container, then filed them exactly as before.

However, after updating the library, all of the AVI files were correctly removed (because I deleted them), and NONE of the MKV files were “found”. Then I went super ■■■■ about name and tried the following:
v shows\x-files\season 1\x-filesE01.mkv

Still nothing. Then I tried this:
XX1.mkv

It then shows up but just as that completely useless file name! What the heck? Please help!!

Thetvdb.com displays the show as The X-Files, and that is what Plex is looking for

Thanks - I tried, still no dice. I wasn’t hopeful to be honest since, as I said before, the naming can’t be the issue - it could see them when the identical naming was used prior to a change in file format…AND Plex “sees” them when they’re named with names like XX1.mkv.

The naming should be as follows:

/tv shows /The X-Files /Season 01 <-- Optional /The X-Files - SXXEXX - Episode Title.ext
or

/tv shows /The X-Files /SXXEXX.ext

Without naming the folder correctly (The X-Files), you will get varying results of accuracy.

Please refer to the recommended naming conventions first, if you think you have named it exactly as per this article and you still have issues then please attach your Plex Media Scanner.log file.

Naming should be:

v shows\The X-Files\Season 01\The X-Files - s01e01.avi

Thanks for the replies. I’m not sure how much clearer I can be about this, so I’ll try again with dates:

Feb 14th: All X-files shown in Plex, using the naming convention: v shows\x-files\x-filesS01E02.avi

Feb 15th: Deleted All X-files

Feb 15th: Copied new files into existing folders, MAINTAINING the same naming convention that worked orginially: v shows\x-files\x-filesS01E02.MKV

Feb 15th: Plex doesn’t see or find any files.

The above responses regarding naming convention do not address the two facts:

  1. Plex used to see them and list them correctly, and now, using the same naming convention, it doesn’t; and
  2. If I rename a file to something incomprehensible like RMVB.mkv, it DOES see them.

Therefore, please let me know how to report a log so we can move past the naming convention issues.

If your naming is not pretty much perfect then previous behavior is no indication of future events. Things change behind the scenes and marginal conditions that seemed to work perfectly can suddenly and without warning cease to work at all.

That does not mean that the naming is the problem but it is extremely easy to get naming correct and it really makes no sense to fight with Plex’s desires if you wish to use Plex.

You say your naming is: " v shows\x-files\x-filesS01E02.avi" and that is wrong. It should be " v shows\The X-Files\Season 01\The X-files - S01E02.avi" All your file should be named in the same manner and there should be season folders although many people do not use season folders it is best practice.

I suspect that simply adding a space after “file” and before “S01E02” might fix the problem but if you are going to do that you might as well fix the full name and structure.

You can use a program like FileBot to fix the naming in bulk.

EDIT:
And for logs there is a announcement post near the top of this section that tells you where to find them: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/25417/where-are-the-pms-logs-on-windows

a bit late on the reply but just incase somebody els runs into this thread with the same proble.

I had the same problem also with the X-Files, I fixed it by taking away the “-”, I think Plex uses it as a tool to understand the file,

The X Files s06e01 - The Beginning.mkv

works and displays the episode name in Plex correctly but

The X-Files s06e01 - The Beginning.mkv #with the “-”

gives me all kind of un expected results, like messed up order and or episode names or it not showing up at all.
