Is there an alternate to use Plex with another service in the US?
We are writing to inform you that we will be ending the HDHomerun Premium TV service over the course of the next 30 days. All individuals currently subscribed to Premium TV will be able to continue their service until their current month of service has concluded, at which time service will not be renewed.
We want to thank you for your business, and we want to assure you that we are not done innovating. We are excited about upcoming plans for improving the cord cutting and cord shaving experiences.
Does this move by SiliconDust affect DVR using Plex ? I think Plex uses their own TV guide to schedule recording, we just can’t use HDHomerun software to stream TV. This is how I understand this.
Now I get it, it affects customers who were subscribed to Silicon Dust service, doesn’t affect people using OTA channels.
I’m super not happy about this. I literally was going to cut my services tomorrow to solely use there’s. I bought an extra tuner just to handle the demand around my house.
Yep. Same here. Was gonna cancel DirectTV Now this week since they just bumped their service another 10 bucks for the second time in 6 months. I just got the SD Premium TV up and integrated with Plex, bought another Extend to handle the load, then this. Oh well. Been needing a second Extend for a few years now anyway.
It sure was nice to have a premium TV streaming service integrated with Plex Live TV/DVR with a media guide though. Great concept.
I sure hate to give AT&T more money for their mediocre DirectTVNow service. Already tried Playstation Vue and Sling also. Maybe it’s time to give Youtube a try - although giving more money to Google doesn’t appeal to me either. I guess it’s time to shop around. So disappointing.
It doesn’t affect the OTA channels just the extra ones that you pay for if you’re purchasing their service
For those who do not know I’m sure it is because SiliconDust and other companies get those streams through Omniverse One World Television, which is currently being sued by some major networks and studios.
Thanks. It’s just frustrating because I just bought another Nvidia shield and another tuner to add to my stack. So four hundred bucks right there plus I just bought their service 2 weeks ago.
I would love to see them support sling or something so I can still do the same thing with the tuners I have
Here’s some very interesting background to why SiliconDust HDHomeRun PremiumTV is shutting down. It is a shame because the technology they demonstrated (adding OTT cable services to an OTA tuner) is very cool.
Seems SiliconDust was getting their signals from Omniverse, a company whose rights to those signals apparently trace to some very old bulk signal contracts designed to provide satellite TV service to multiple dwelling units (aka apartments). Lawsuits alleging copyright infringement were filed in February. Apparently SiliconDust shut down the service preemptively to avoid in allegations that they were infringing. Let’s hope that either Omniverse will prevail in the lawsuits or that SiliconDust will find a new source for their OTT signals.

Bummed about this… what are the alternatives?
Apparently Omniverse and their downstream providers were operating in a shaky space so this as someone commented, no surprise. I blindly jumped in and canceled Cox Cable when Premium first became available. But from the beginning, the video quality and audio stream support was so poor that I was not too disappointed when it blew up.
I got my HDHR Prime out of the garage and got a CableCard/Tuning Adapter from Cox and now am back up and running (after the requisite 2.5 technicians and 3,5 hours to get it all paired, certified, EPG’d and the rest). But the picture and audio is so much better than “Premium TV”.
It is amazing how long it takes the Plex server to tune in a station, typically 5-10 seconds, sometimes it even fails due to some timeout that must be programmed in. Testing with the HD App from SD, it takes less than 2 seconds on any of their products, wish Plex could fix this as so many recordings fail because of this.
On the YouTube TV side, I tried this for a few months (as I try everything) and was highly disappointed in the bizarre UI where you can’t understand what is going on, no reasonable way to manage recordings and the ads they throw at you, no comparison to Plex. It is the typical big internet company product.
Crapcast, AT&T and other service providers will make sure that they won’t have any competition, and unfortunately they are successful so far.
One alternative is AirTV (not to be confused with AirTV Player) + SlingTV. You won’t be able to use it with Plex, but you will be able combine OTA channels with cable channels in a single traditional guide. Combine that with an Nvidia Shield and an external hard drive for DVR and it’s a pretty decent setup.
