If you buy silicondust hdhomerun, for TV tuner, and I have lifetime plex pass, do I still need to pay $35.00 annual DVR service to be able to record stuff using silicondust hdhomerun, as they mentioned in their website?
A Plex Pass includes DVR guide/service for the countries mentioned in this support article, near the end of the page:
If you’re in one of the above countries and you use Plex for your DVR, you do not need Silicon Dust’s DVR service (so you don’t pay them).
For other countries, there are other options, post again if that’s the case for you.
I live in Norway. And Norway was mentioned in the article you have sent me. so thank you very much for your help. I can now then buy silicondust hdhomerun TV tuner
Be aware though that in some countries the Plex EPG has been appallingly bad (in my case, UK) since they swapped providers back in July. Check the forum to see if people have problems in your country.
In order to get round this I have to subscribe to Shedules Direct to get an accurate (well, more accurate) XML feed.
Which is against their TOS but I won’t accuse you
Thanks for your note. I appreciate it.
I have some questions though. what TV tuner do you use? or does this not matter?
Do you have the same problem on all devices?
No, it’s not - I am using it with NextPVR!
Plex has been relegated to playback (not record) only …and some test recording.
Sorry, I didn’t make that clear earlier.
One more question please. I get my TV here in Norway through Altibox. it’s through a fiber ethernet. From the same modem from the same supporter. Does that work, or does it has to be an antenna?
Thanks
The HDhomerun is a tuner. With an IPTV service like you have, it is unfortunately useless to you.
So I must have an antenna for that work? How can I make it work?
Depending on which model you have, a HDHR needs either an antenna (DVB-T/T2") or a traditional digital “tv cable” connection (in Europe this would be called “DVB-C”) (unencrypted).
And there is no other way to making work with IPTV? like using a third party or so?
I have heard about software which acts as a translator between your IPTV service and Plex (making it appear to Plex as if you had a HDHR tuner).
One is called https://xteve.de/ (Windows), see https://www.pocketables.com/2019/08/how-to-get-your-iptv-into-plex-or-onto-your-smart-tv.html
The other is https://tvheadend.org/ (Linux) (probably needs additional extension modules).
In both cases you won’t need the HDHomeRun box.
Thank you very much. I appreciate your help and patience
Which direction OP goes will depend on how his IPTV packets are delivered (protocol.)
If they’re delivered via an http/https stream, XTeve will probably be sufficient.
If he gets IPTV by multicast protocols (UDP,) then XTeve won’t do it, XTeve (and this is straight from the author/maintainer,) does not address the multicasting. In that case, tvHeadend does work, is more involved, and in my case (UDP multicast,) I set up tvhProxy to get Plex and tvHeadend talking gracefully to each other.
In either case, OP will need some form of a .m3u or .m3u8 file that describes the channels, channel numbering, and delivery method. I’ve had to manually generate one for myself.
Sorry, didn’t want to attack you, just state this for other users who might think of SD as an alternative source for their EPG.
no worries
…but felt I had to clear my name!
I’m waiting for Plex’s EPG to become reliable, but it’s 6 months now and there are so many major errors popping up that I think it’s time to give upon even trying.
Understandable. I am in the same boat as you (and many others) and right now even fiddling with screen grabbers (webgrabplus) to find other useful guide sources. What a mess…
In Australia we were left out completely but I use a free xml EPG without issue. So maybe that’s the best course.
I haven’t found a viable solution for Germany yet. Schedules direct often lacks S/E information (and I am not allowed to use them ;)) and these screen grabbed solutions don’t perfectly either in this regard.
I might try the xmltv solution, but I am not yet ready to pay another 20€/year for the epg without knowing whether it suits my needs.
