No Plexamp window on Ubuntu Mate with two active monitors

I downloded linux version of Plexamp (Plexamp-3.4.0.AppImage) and when i try to run it nothing happens.
When I run it using terminal I get:

Started Media Service: false
Linux: Registering MPRIS service.

Thats it.
How can I fix it so I can enjoy Plexamp on my PC?

OS: Ubuntu Mate 20.04.1 LTS (64bit)
Player Version#: 3.4.0

Hi - I see a similar issue on GNOME (Ubuntu 20.10). Launching the appimage does not bring up an application window. However, if I go to the system notification window (with the media controls, calendar, etc) I can click on the media control panel and voila - Plexamp appears.
Not sure if you have the same in MATE but it might be worth a look.

Hi! Thank you for suggestion, but that did not work on MATE. There is multimedia control menu, but Plexamp does not show there.

OK a similar thing just happened to me right now. On a whim I deleted the following two files, and after that Plexamp started right up, although I did need to log in again.

~/.config/Plexamp/SingletonLock
~/.config/Plexamp/SingletonCookie

ok, that made some progress, but still no Plexamp window. And nothing in media control panel.
BUT in terminal it showed more then previously:

Started Media Service: false
Linux: Registering MPRIS service.

Oh, and terminal did not return to stat position where i can enter command, so I assume that Plexamp is running, but window is not visible.

Got Plexamp window!

I’m working on laptops dedicated NVIDIA graphics card on external monitor and i turned off Intel’s (native laptop’s monitor). I just had and idea, that this might be at fault. I opened display settings and turned Intel’s monitor on and viola! Plexamp showed up. And two separate windows
Then I turned Intel card off and Plexamp is still visible.

Unfortunately if i close Plexamp and run it again, I get same no window situation. So I assume there is something to do with graphic cards and external monitors.
When I did turn Intels card back on Plexamp showed and I had to login again.

It looks like Plexamp has problems showing window when there are more than one monitor connected.
I just installed Ubuntu Mate on desktop computer and it has also two monitors connected. This time it’s same graphics card for both monitors. Got the same problem there too. No Plexamp window upon launch. Then I opened display settings and changed primary monitor and after I clicked Apply, 2 Plexamp windows appeared. I revert back to previous display setup and Plexamp windows stayed.
I bet on next pc restart I will have to do this again.

Please fix this bug.

Hi, yeah I think there are also issues when only a single monitor is connected. I have a home desktop which is quite vanilla Ubuntu 20.10 aside from an nVidia video card (GTX970 I think?) and I still have issues with the Plexamp window.

On first launch it seems fine, but if I quit and relaunch it will either not show a window at all, or be entirely blank. I’m still struggling to diagnose further and find a reproducible failure.

I certainly would like to hear from anyone else on Linux/Ubuntu who has had success with Plexamp - what is your setup?

Just updated to “Plexamp-3.4.1.AppImage” and this problem still persists.

Agreed, still unusable for me too. Let me reiterate what I’m seeing just to be clear. This is running Ubuntu 20.10 on a Dell XPS15 2019 model. I see all of the same issues on my desktop PC also running Ubuntu 20.10.

  1. Remove previous installation files in ~/.config/Plexamp, ~/.local/share/Plexamp, and ~/.cache/Plexamp directories.
  2. Download fresh copy of Plexamp AppImage
  3. Set the execution permission on the AppImage
  4. Launch the AppImage. No window appears, nor does an additional entry appear in the dock. In the system notification area I see a new set of media controls with “Unknown artist / Unknown title”. Clicking this pops up the Plexamp window. A blank application icon appears in the dock.
  5. I can log into my plex account (getting yet another email)
  6. Select my muic library
  7. Play music, generally enjoy Plexamp. Everything seems to work.
  8. Quit Plexamp
  9. Launch AppImage again. Again no window appears, but there is a media control panel in the system notification area, with the last-played artist and title.
  10. Clicking on the media control panel produces an entirely blank window, with the same size and position as it was when last run. No controls or text visible. However the last-played music can be resumed, using the media controls in the notification area. Other than that, Plexamp is totally nonfunctional.

Having the same issue as well :/. On Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS running GTX 1070 and I am using two monitors. My log:

(plexamp:4877): Gtk-WARNING **: 15:20:33.135: Theme parsing error: gtk.css:6361:24: 'none' is not a valid color name
Started Media Service: false
Linux: Registering MPRIS service.

Here is what I do everytime I need to start Plexamp.

Delete ~/.config/Plexamp
Run Plexamp (no Plexamp window appears). Open Gnome Display settings. Change something ( I usually set second monitor as primary), Apply. Now Plexamp windows should appear. Don’t keep display settings you just applied. Close Display settings window and you’re good to use Plexamp. Oh, and you will need to log-in to Plexamp again.

Thank you very much @djbacon! Works now

Please fix this bug!

Same issue on Linux Mint 20.1. I have 4 monitors and get no Plexamp window. Changing the 2nd monitor to primary does not bring up plexamp window.

/Plexamp-3.4.2_7b19ff7931bb2e3db927ae766acb8dfa.AppImage
qt5ct: using qt5ct plugin
Started Media Service: false
Linux: Registering MPRIS service.

Nothing after that.

Edit: Disabling all but 1 monitor allows the window to show. So yes I have the same issue.
Edit2: Same issue on Pop!_OS 20.10

It looks like method varies on systems with different number of monitors.

So far looks like this bug is present on Ubuntu/Debian based Linux distros.

Version 3.4.2 that was released today did not resolve the issue before anyone gets excited.

Couple of days ago my Pop!_OS 20.10 froze while Plexamp was playing.
I had to reset PC. It booted normally, but when I clicked on Plexamp, it opened without me changing any display settings. I have bash script that deletes ~/.config/Plexamp and then runs Plexamp.AppImage. This was first time that Plexamp windows showed without changing display settings.
On next boot it was back to not showing Plexamp window.

Just thought like mentioning it.

I just wrote a little script to launch Plexamp. I save it in plexamp.sh

#!/bin/bash
rm -R /home/username/.config/Plexamp
cd /home/username/bin/plexamp
./Plexamp-3.4.3.AppImage &
sleep 1
xrandr -o left
sleep 1
xrandr -o normal

and it works like a charm. well, almost. you need to login again.
maybe this will help some of you.

just remember to change Plexamp location to yours.

I can confirm this absolutely works for me Ubuntu 20.04. Thanks for the solution!

It would be nice if we didn’t have to jump through this hoop.
