No remote access: BGW320 > TP Link Deco Mesh 90 > Synology DS918

Server Version#: latest
Player Version#: latest
I hope that I am not reposting but I am totally lost and I just can not find an answer anywhere.

My ISP is ATT Fiber, and behind it in passthrough I have a TP Link Deco Mesh 90 router to which my Synology Server is hardwired.

I’ve been looking for days for ways to enable remote access, but I can’t find how.

Does someone have a good way to do that?

Thanks

Is the ATT router in passthrough mode or the TP Link?

I have Comcast with pfSense.
My Comcast it in Passthrough mode with the pfSense creating the LAN and the Remote Access. WiFi is managed separately by a WiFI AP (no routing) connected to the LAN.

The question – Do your DEBUG server logs complain of Double NAT ?

Hi @ChuckPa ,

Thanks for taking the time.
It’s the ATT gateway that is in passthrough mode, screenshot: IMG-9-EE03-FCE79-CB-1 hosted at ImgBB — ImgBB and this is what my Plex settings look like: Annotation-on-2024-04-28-at-09-08-43 hosted at ImgBB — ImgBB.

You’re correct, the debug logs show double NAT issues:
Apr 28, 2024 09:13:15.938 [139651205016376] DEBUG - [Req#4be7] MyPlex: async reachability check - current mapped state: ‘Mapped - Not Published (Double NAT)’.

Apr 28, 2024 09:13:21.199 [139651907091256] ERROR - [EventSourceClient/pubsub/45.xxx.xxx.195:443] MyPlex: mapping failed due to potential double NAT configuration
Apr 28, 2024 09:13:21.199 [139651907091256] DEBUG - [EventSourceClient/pubsub/45.xxx.xxx.195:443] MyPlex: mapping state set to ‘Mapped - Not Published (Double NAT)’.

Is the fact that it complains about double NAT an indication as to what to fix?

Seeing Double NAT tells you:

  1. Your WAN address is being translated to a LAN address
    -and-
  2. Another device in the chain is performing another subnet translation

Example of double NAT:

95.104.101.16 ->  192.168.1.100 ->   10.0.0.1     ->   10.0.0.16
(WAN IP) -> (ISP modem) -> (next device) -> PMS server

You need to look at all the addresses on all the devices in the chain from server → ISP entry point. There should be only 1 translation (WAN → LAN)

In the BGW320, turn off wi-fi and disable the firewall, if you have not already done so.

Can you see the WAN IP address of the TP Link? It should be displayed in the web interface, app, or however the device is managed.

It should match the Public IP address displayed in Plex Settings → Remote Access (7_____2).

It should also match the IPv4 address displayed via https://whatismyipaddress.com/ (or similar sites).

I did all of this and it was still not working.
So, I decided to go with Tailscale and be done, it seems to work fine.
Thanks for your help!

I wish that Plex had clearer tutorials for all these use cases. So many people seem to have the same issue.
