No "Resume" button on Nvidia Shield Pro

I watched 3/4 of a film; went to resume it later. The film is listed under “continue watching” and the progress bar indicates it’s 3/4 of the way through.
On other Plex clients (LG TV, web browser, but NOT android phone) I have a “Resume” button, but there isn’t one on the Shield.
Have tried resetting the shield and the server, and reinstalling Plex. No luck.

How can I get the Resume button back?

In my experience the Android app is pretty buggy and inconsistent.

Some times the button shows Resume other times it does not.

I was watching an episode of a show this evening on my Shield. I stopped it to take a call. Although the Preplay screen showed 22 Mins remaining I only had a Play button, and it started from the beginning. I have another shows episode that does show the resume button.

I only just started using Plex. Do they normally fix this sort of thing? Like… the TV app should work

On what version of Plex for Android TV are you experiencing this?
I just checked and my previously started items show both Resume and Play from start options (Plex for Android TV 8.29.1 on a Sony TV).

If you leave the preplay and coming back to it does it show up? What version number are you running?

I don’t know, as I did not try. I just fast forwarded to where I had got to

I am on the beta release, 8.3 something, can not look at the mo as it in use.

I’m running 8.29.1.30697. It’s the version from the Play Store, system and app both fully updated. Server is fully updated too, to 1.25.5.5492.

Another weird quirk: films that show up under “continue watching” are not being shown with their cover art, but with stills from the respective video files.

I even tried factory resetting the Shield to fix this, but it didn’t help. Resume is still offered on the web browser Plex client. (But not on the Android phone client)

Could this be something as simple as that I don’t have a Plex Pass/subscription and am just using the free version?

No. that is not paid functionality.

I have 8.30.0.30889 installed and it is there. it should be available as a beta update.

Though I am wondering is this might be combined with a server version issue. I am running an alpha version of server

Re the cover art: yes, it’s the same in the browser web app. Not happening with every film I play, but with some. And can be fixed by manually reselecting the previous cover art.

But this is kind of what I mean about the app being inconsistent. Sometimes it works as expected, other times not. Without being able to see what the difference is.

For what it’s worth, no show or film I’ve watched for a few mins then backed out to the preplay screen offers a resume button. Even though a progress bar is shown.

About half of the films then replace the poster art with the preplay backdrop art.

I’ve wondered about reinstalling the server, but that seems like it wouldn’t do anything to fix the Android TV app.

If that is happening on web app as well where poster are does not show then something else is going on with metadata. I can’t think of any way offhand the Android app itself could change the poster art.

To be a bit more clear: once the poster art changes, it changes for the web app too.

But the change happens only on the Android TV app. It happens after exiting the preplay screen and navigating to home.

The fix for this is easy, though. I’m more bothered about the lack of a Resume button. Is there anything I can do to get the Resume button on the Android TV app?

I note that there also seems to be no Resume option on the Android phone app.

Mine is now on 8.30.0.30889, so probably not to do with the server version, mine just may have taken a bit longer to get the update.

I was trying to see if I could get it replicate the issue, and so far no, but…

Something odd that does seem reproducable:

  • Watched part of an episode (not sure that is needed)
  • Backed out to the preplay/episodes screen
  • The part watched episode is highlighted/selected
  • I see The Episode tile, Episode Description etc, a resume button and a play from start button
  • On my comp, if I go to the webapp and trigger a manual scan on any of the libraries, does not matter which library, or even if nothing has been added. When the scan is complete strange things happen, The text panel changes to just show the Show Name, Season and Year, Episode info all disappears and so does the Play from start button. Sometimes all the episodes are dimmed, some times the unfinished episode is still selected.
