No "Resume" button for movies in player for Shield or Sony TV player

This started happening on my Sony Smart TV as well as Nvidia Shield. The Nvidia Shield is connected to the Sony Smart TV.

When I start Plex and try to continue watching a movie I had started earlier, I do not see a “Resume” button. Pressing the “Play” button starts the movie from the beginning. I know this wasn’t the case a while ago.

The Roku connected to the same TV works fine. It shows the “Resume” button when I select the movie. Unfortunately, it is a 1080p version and hence I don’t use it for 4K movies. Looks like this seems to point to the android-tv version of the app as having the issue.

I updated to the latest version of the Plex Server on my Windows 7 PC but it didn’t help. The Sony and Shield have the latest Plex player versions.

Hope someone can help or point me to some troubleshooting tips. Thanks!

Are you signed into the app? The watched progress is tied to your account. If you don’t sign in, that info isn’t there for it to know to continue.

No, I have never signed in into the app but it used to work before. Even on the Roku and Windows Player, I am not signed in to my Plex account and it works.

Has the behavior changed in the recent update? Thanks!

Also, another item to mention. When I am on the screen showing the movie cover and the “Play” & other buttons, the movie cover has a progress bar embedded in it showing how much of the movie has been watched. So, it appears that the app knows where to resume from but just doesn’t have the resume button. :frowning:

I am the only user of the app on the TV, Shield and Roku, so I have never logged in to a Plex account. I only watch the media that I have ripped on to my PC.

The device itself will remember what is being watched, but since you are not signed it, that progress does not carry over to other Plex clients.

If you start watching something on the Plex for Android app and stop part way, coming back to the app should give you the option to resume. But again, this progress will not carry over to other devices so you cannot resume on those.

First of all, thanks for your responses. I understand what you are saying, but for some reason, my devices don’t seem to be behaving that way. :frowning:

More details:

  • I started watching the movie using Plex on my Sony TV app, stopped it to watch cable TV, and came back to the Sony TV app, and I could see no resume button.
  • I then opened the Plex app on the Nvidia Shields and saw the same behavior - no resume button.
  • Then, I opened the Plex app on the Roku, which I have not used for several months, and that had the resume button with the correct resume time! The movie had not been opened on the Roku at all before that.

None of the devices were signed on and the device I started the movie on did not show the resume button when I tried to continue watching the movie. I have never signed into Plex in any of my devices and the resume function was working properly on the Sony TV and Shield until a few months ago.

Just bringing it to your attention in case it is a bug in the last few releases of the Android-TV app. Hope others who use Android TV app chime in in case they are having the same issue too.

Once again, thanks again for your responses. Hope it starts working again for me soon.

When you don’t sign in, any information will only be saved in the app’s cache. This can get cleared by the device if it runs low on memory, like if you switch to another app, or if you are away for a long time. We can’t control this.

If you decide to sign in, you’ll be able to resume from any other device as your account will update across all of them.

Thanks again. Hopefully, my Android-TV devices will regain their old feature/bug after a future update.
