Hey guys

First I apologize if this is the wrong section. I have an inconsistent issue, some mkv video files do not work properly on the TV I use, not sure if it’s a Plex issue or the tv.

Tv is a LG UK6200PLA with webOS 4.1.0 and Plex for LG server 4.19.1.

The issue is simple, some mkv videos don’t have sound if I use a subtitle. If I disable the subtitles, the sound works fine. I tried ripping the hardcoded subtitles from them so I can use an external srt file, but audio is off even with srt files.

Any advice? Should I convert the videos to something else for consistent results? Can I burn the subtitles on the video somehow so they don’t have to be processed separately?

Thank you

“Hardsubbed” is the term for subtitles that are part of the video image, you cannot remove them easily by ripping them. I think you are referring to image-based VOB or PGS format subs that are used on commercial video discs.

If you leave them in their original format they should be triggering a transcode of the video back at the server to add them (burn them in) to the video for playback. There may be an issue there that is causing the audio sync problem you mentioned.

If the subs are being ripped into an SRT text format like you mentioned, the LG player should be able to handle it natively and no transcoding should be required.

You do have the option of having the subtitles burned into the video when to encoder from your disc, but that is dependant on the software you are you using to rip and you would need to inquire on their support about how to do that.

None of this really addresses why you are losing audio to begin with, but you would need to give us more information on the media you are having the problem on (codecs for audio and video, container, HDR or not, resolution…).

Sorry for the late reply, weekend. Given the fact that the problem occurs on multiple videos with different formats, because some mkvs subtitles work fine while others don’t have sound if I use subtitles, I will try to find a solution for hardcoding them on the videos that don’t work.

Too complicated to dissect each video, because if if I rip the subtitle into a SRT file it still doesn’t work for none of the videos that have issues.

Thank you nevertheless.

There are several closed topics regarding the handling of DTS Audio and PGS subtitles. Essentially, if you have PGS subtitles enabled, the video plays ok, transcoding is working just fine, subtitles are on point, but the direct stream audio fails. It simply plays nothing. No sound at all. I have found this to ALWAYS be the case in every single video I play with PGS subs (burned in of course, as PGS is not supported for direct play). No problems with any other type. There seems to be no traction, or a fix. I’ve had the issue for almost a year now, and always with whatever the latest server is, and latest plex app in LG WebOS. Wondering if anything is going to be done. Simply search for topics of “no sound when using subtitles” and you’ll find them. It’s annoying as hell, as the srt files are only sometimes correct (shifting does not work, as over time the subtitles continue to offset out of phase as the video plays on).

Yup, before posting this I have read several topic about similar issues and it seems it’s not something new. That’s why I decided to just hardcode the subtitles if there is no other solution. Thanks for the heads up.

I have the same issues.
When i use the PLEX-Android-TV-App to start the movie with Overlay-Subtitles the DTS-Audio is not being played back at all. Without subtitles its not a problem.
However i figured it works fine even with subtitles when i start the video through my PC and select to playback on my TV-Set for some reason.
So i assume this must to be a software error in the plex-app since its possible to work smothly.

My solution was to change quality of the played videos. Now it works fine.
