App name: Plex for LG
Client version: 5.81.1
Platform version: 8.3.0
Subtitle type: Japanese PGS [Japanese (SDH)]
Audio type: Japanese 5.1ch DTS-HD Master Audio @ 3361 kb/s - DTS-HD MA 5.1
At first, with these settings:
Allow Direct Play- selected
Allow Directed Stream- selected
Force Direct Play- selected
Burn Subtitles- Automatic
Everything was fine (Plex was playing the show with 5.1 audio with subtitles on), but after around 5-10 minutes of video playback, the subtitles suddenly disappeared. I then tried exiting the video and resuming the video from the point where I left off. The subtitles came back for less than a minute before disappearing again. Sometimes, restarting makes the subtitles come back and sometimes it does not come back. I’m not exactly sure what makes it come back and then disappear again.
If I use these settings,
At first, with these settings:
Allow Direct Play- selected
Allow Directed Stream- selected
Force Direct Play- UNSELECTED
Burn Subtitles- Always
The subtitles work throughout video playback, but the audio is no longer 5.1.
I have tried different combinations of these settings, but direct play must be on for the audio to be 5.1 However, that makes the subtitles inconsistent in when they appear and without touching the remote after starting a episode, the subtitles are usually only there for at least a couple of minutes.
How do I consistently get 5.1 audio with consistent subtitles that don’t disappear?
I’m also having similar issues with subtitles, but with the web player. I didn’t receive any support with my problem but looking into it myself I figured out it was happening only with mp4 files. So I just switched to mkv formatted files. Perhaps you could try different combinations of files and subtitles formats for your issue.
Overall I think plex needs to redo their whole subtitles code. The support is spotty at best, issues with disappearing subtitles cropped up for people over the years, again and again. Some subtitles just crash the streams(in the web player but not the windows app) if they have some weird formatting in them, like for anime. It’s all a mess imho.
While googling for my issue I saw plenty of similar problems over the years and the only advice that people got was just burn in the subtitles. Which is too big of an ask for me.
All my shows are mkv. I think a different subtitle format would work, but I like the font of my current subtitles and I shouldn’t have to convert my subtitles into a different format. If the staff wants, I can get in a call to show how to reproduce this issue.
Same issue for me on a LG C5 & LG C3 with PGS subtitles (SRT seems to be ok).
Most of the files are mkv with embedded subtitles
Works for 1-2 minutes then disappears. I can restart the video, and they return for another 1-2 minutes.
Burning in works for me on a 1080p video, not sure my system could handle 4k.
I am also having this issue, but it got worse. Now all of my videos just give a playback error if i have any subtitles turned on. videos play fine with subtitles on the web browser on the pc. it’s just the Web OS app. The LG app hasnt been updated for over a year. according to the date the lg app store displays. definitely needs fixing.
