I have had this happen a couple times and it has me perplexed. On a few but not all movies I get no sound (video is fine) using Plex. If I run the same movie on my pc using VLC the sound is fine.
Is there a solution for this issue??

Without knowing the format of the file or the streams contained therein - we’re going nowhere at Warp 9.9:
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201998867-Investigate-Media-Information-and-Formats
Also need to know what you’re trying to play these items with:
Device? Plexweb? (Server Interface with a player - not recommended for everyday viewing) Plex Media Player? (preferred), Windows Store App (total crap - avoid at all costs), etc.
Info needed:
File Container Format: MKV/MP4/AVI, etc
Video Stream Format: AVC, H264, VC-1, HEVC, etc.
Audio Stream Format: AAC (2.0, 5.1, LC, Main, etc), AC3 (see previous), EAC3 (see previous), DTS, FLAC, etc
The movie format for this last one with no sound is .mkv. I have played many movies with this movie format I use Plex Media Server and I am always signed into it.
Where do I find Video Stream Format and Audio Stream Format?
Since I have run this movie format many time I am NOT sure why it does not work all the time?
OK think I have it:
Video Stream is AVC and the Audio stream is MP3 2.0
Not sure what that has to do with it but that what it says at the download.
You should post the XML file so we can see it.
It would seem whatever you’re using to play/view this material can’t deal with an MP3 audio stream inside a Video Container - and for some reason Plex is unwilling, or unable to transcode a compatible audio stream.
Plexweb runs in a browser and will be severely compromised in what it can effectively deal with.
Plex Media Player is much better equipped to deal with whatever you throw at it (top of the forum/downloads/get an app).
If you’re using a ‘Device’ of some kind to play this material with - REVEAL WHAT THAT DEVICE IS!
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201998867-Investigate-Media-Information-and-Formats
The XML information found at the link above will be very helpful as would a complete set of log files:
Copy XML info, paste to message, highlight and select ‘Code’ from the drop down under the ‘backwards P’ in the message options.
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200250417-Plex-Media-Server-Log-Files
Drag zip file to a message window and drop it.
And, of course, reveal the title of the item that’s failing, the time you tried to play it and gather those log files AFTER you try to play it, it fails, and you have waited a few minutes afterwards.
I never know what the video’s streaming audio is going to be before downloading the movie.
I have tried to find software that can change the mp3 to an acceptable file but so far no luck.
Thanks for the help.

Handbrake will do it well. It works and it’s free and cross platform. But whats best is to avoid if possible, it can also have issues with “gain level”. What JuiceWSA is saying is correct, best medicine is not needing it.

An expected side effect when downloading movies. You never know what your going to get.
^^ that - and a box of chocolates. Eater Beware, but there is a little ‘feature’ most of the time called ‘View Metadata or Details’.
If you get a bogus download (get used to it) and need a quick audio repair job:
http://www.xmedia-recode.de/en/download.html
Nutshell: Format - pick the same, Video - Copy, Audio - Convert
(so easy to use - it hardly requires further instructions - we hope)
If you get a really, really bogus download and want to re-code audio and video (so it will play on something):
https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/comment/1335697/#Comment_1335697
(this does require reading and looking at pictures - use at your own risk)
I have used Handbrake before and I know it is free (or was) but I did NOT know I could change the audio file in the movie. I will have to check on that.

You can, it’s easy, and fast.
I use Xmedia Recode many times a day.
The correct solution should never be “don’t play those files” or “re-encode them.” When we can play them perfectly fine in other players like VLC or using the installed codecs, really Plex is the problem, at the very least a feature request would be in order. It’s hard to know what Plex is trying to do or whether or not we can find the correct codec for Plex. K-lite solved the whole codec problem 10+ years ago.
So, this is happening to me also, but wait! There more! This is happening to video files I have had and played on plex FOR YEARS!!! Suddenly some dont play audio anymore.
I too am suddenly experiencing this issue - media that has played fine on PC via Plex before, plays fine on other devices while using Plex (Roku, mobile, etc.), suddenly has no audio via Plex on PC. I’ve tweaked transcoder, etc. to no avail. Figure it’s yet another bug slipping through from the latest Plex update (issue only started since then).
Same here. Playing via Plex Media Player on Mac mini and have been having issues with audio not working. I have to use my Roku in order for the audio to work. so frustrating. Anyone find a solution?
Plus one here. If I play through the Plex app on my Mac it is fine (Plex server is a PC) but playing through WebOS app there is no audio. If I try through the shield it throws me an error saying the media server has crashed (it hasn’t).
These are files that I have watched before but now it’s happening to a lot of movies I have.
anyone got this solved yet? Same for me. Movies that has worked for years has no sound. must be a crappy upgrade?
I began having this problem after a computer upgrade this Spring. I’m assuming the Plex Server is an upgraded version as well. The major issue, for me, is all of my videos are encoded the same way (using HandBrake with the same settings) and only some of the videos have issues with the sound. Most of the ones with issues are ‘older’, encoded further back in time though the more recent encodes use the same settings in HandBrake. These videos do have sound when streamed to a phone, just not my Roku.
So, in two years the only suggestion that can be given is re-encode all effected videos? It would seem like the Plex Server is having the issues more than the video sources.
I have also this issue, some movies/tv dont have sound in playback max settings quality.
per example:
https://pastebin.com/6EUDBbTU
This is in PS4. In the computer works fine in playback max setting.
If i lower the quality setting it works fine.
