I was just checking to see if Sony had approved the app for the NA store and ran into this little tidbit:
Note: Plex on PlayStation 3 is limited to 720p (e.g. 1280 x 720px) output resolution.
I read it 3 times just to make sure I wasn't missing anything. If that is truly the case then why even bother making a player for the PS3? Seriously. I can handle a 720P UI, but if the playback is not going to be 1080P then this whole thing is just a laughable waste of time. In what world is that acceptable? If your going to do something find out if it can be done right first. If it can't shift resources to something else.
I am a long time contributor to the Plex project and this is just baffling. Is the plan that at some point we will get 1080p playback?
Back to the Roku and its lackluster interface.....

While i agree the limited resolution is far from ideal there will still be 1000's of people who would still prefer 'something' rather than 'nothing' and given that I don't know why Plex on the PS3 is limited i'm still pretty happy.
There is no way i would consider using a PS3 (or any other limited device, roku included) as my main client but as a means to get media into a secondary room on hardware which i already owned it's still a valuable option.
My point is, asking Plex 'why even bother' is a little harsh.
I get UI being tied in at 720p, but video? I really hope BOTH the ps4 and ps3 get 1080p video support. I'm dumb founded that the PS4 isn't 1080p video out of the gate. Not sure how that is even close to acceptable with a world moving to 4k.
It's a disappointment really, I got plex pass almost exclusively for this native playstation app, just to discover it's an inferior version in every aspect compared to a chromecast/tablet experience.
I hope Plex team will get this right soon (or rather Sony, I bet they have something to do with this, they are always trying to hold back any source that is not the PSN store)

Every other Video App on the PS3 delivers 1080p. So it is highly unlikely that it's Sonys fault.

Hi George - just curious on why you think the ROKU is limited. Are you referring to the horrible interface we are stuck with or do you think the quality of the playback is subpar? I use Direct stream on the Roku 3 which as I understand it would be exactly the same as using the PHT.

The Roku 3 is among the best for it's codec support but by limited i refer primarily to HD audio support.
I would really love a client as feature rich and supportive as a HTPC in an 'appliance' type device but for me there are no perfect alternatives to an HTPC for my main client. I do however totally understand that a HTPC is far from ideal for most people but at this time most of these appliance devices are intentionally crippled.
So, learned something about the PS3 Plex app. The Plex app for SCEE stores is indeed switching video modes to 720p when the app launches. This doesn't seem right to us either.
Please be patient while we work with Sony to get an update out. It will absolutely take some weeks.
I'm just conjecturing here, but if it's anything like other platforms then app developers won't have access to the same resources as a game developer would. It could be possible they don't have access to hardware acceleration or apps are competing for resources with the OS, unlike games which switch into a 'game mode'.
that makes no sense, why would they limit app developers?

Thanks for pursuing this. I just purchased a Lifetime Plex Pass specifically for PS3 access.
