No write access to destination error on recordings

Let me post what my setup was and now currently is:

Was last week:

i7-4770. Win 10 Pro. 8 Gig Ram.
8 TB total storage (2 TB drive, Two 6 TB drives in 2-way mirror) (all internal drives on same server as the Plex server is loaded on)
HDHomeRun Extend
Plex Server v1.8.0.4109

Today:

Everything above plus additional 8 TB of storage in form of two 8 TB external drives. USB 3.0 connected to same computer Plex server is loaded on. One for storage and one setup as weekly backup of first. Thanks Best Buy for having the sale on the easystore external drives.

So I did some re-configuring around of my movie/tv show data. My 2 TB was my TV show drive that I didn’t care if it was lost. It was mostly series that have ended or series I didn’t care about. All the TV series I cared about were on my 6 TB 2-way mirror drive because it has a backup in case one drive fails.

I moved all the TV show data on the 2 TB drive over to my new 8 TB drive. That went fine. Plex saw the changes and adapted to the change fine.

I then moved my OTA DVR recording folder from the 6 TB 2-way mirror drive over to the 2 TB drive. Again Plex saw the changes just fine. All my DVR shows came right back up again and I could play them without errors. Basically I don’t care if the DVR recordings are lost because of a drive failure. Most of the time it’s watched once and never again so I go in and delete stuff from time to time to make room.

So my wife loves Big Brother TV show. I have it set to record new episodes on OTA CBS channel. I changed the recording location from my 6 TB 2-way mirror drive to my 2 TB drive in the series settings. I thought I was done with it. It should record right? Well I was wrong. Sunday’s episode tried to record but it didn’t. It said on the schedule “no write access to destination”.

Ok ok. I figure I must have set up permissions wrong on the 2 TB drive somehow. So I go into the drive properties and set it to shared. I then go into “advanced sharing” and click on the permissions button and set “Everyone” to allow everything including full control. I thought that would surely fix the issue.

Tonight’s episode gets ready to record and when it starts up… I see this again “no write access to destination”. I’m like WTF is going on?!? Everyone on my network has full access to this drive and it’s in a shared state even. The drive is connected to the same computer that the Plex server is loaded on even. It should have no problems. I can play TV shows just fine that are stored on that drive. Why can’t I record to it?

So ultimately I figured out the fix to this. I had to delete the series recording and make it fresh again with all the same settings I had before. Now it will record.

So why did I have to do this? Why wouldn’t it just work when I selected a different location to record to?

Yep. Ive had this even without moving them… somethings funky. In the logs it says “couldn’t get target root path for subscription” and tries to right to .grab instead of C:\blahblah\TV.grab or /media/tv/.grab etc

Dvr is getting worse and worse…

Remove recording schedule and reschedule it and it fixes. annoying but solveable
