Yeah, there are just too many use cases to be able to support them all with a few simple settings. Plex needs something like the “advanced” subtitle selection syntax from LAV Splitter (see here). With that, every user could configure it exactly like he wants.

I’ve been Handbraking a LOT of material this fall - so I can shuffle all winter while in hibernation. Unfortunately, to my horror, I found out Handbrake makes (an) ASS (out of itself) subtitles complete with font formatting tags when you import plain text, UTF-8 subs into it.
Well, I knew that ASS came out, but I never knew about the formatting tags until I tried a few in PMP and Plex for Windows - the ONLY two apps that don’t ignore formatting tags.
The Result: Hulk Subs
(when you’ve busted a bluray down to DVD size - like I do all the time).
Now, do I think I’ll get Plex to realize there’s a problem with PMP and PFW?
I don’t know, but time will tell…
In the meantime, because I can, I am slowly going through all that stuff, demuxing, deformatting and remuxing - so it wasn’t a big deal to fiddle around with Ip Man 3 a while ago. My tools are already out and the work bench looks like a bomb went off on it.

Ahah, I get you. Not the big subtitle stuff, but the tools…yeah, I’m always checking and perfecting every files that joins the library. Subtitles, chapters, quality… but in the end… it’s worth it 
Are there any news on this subject? Is the issue been aknowledged as such or was I just relying on a non intended behaviour?
I can keep this server version indefinitely, but I’d rather have the option to update in the future, thanks!
Can we get this confirmed as true or false? I feel like I’m seeing the same behavior as OP with the same use case (audio default to one language, subtitle default to another, Always enabled is selected), and it’s picking the “forced” track instead of the normal one (which is also flagged as default in the MKV file).
In my case, the forced track is the first subtitle track in the file as well, so I’m going to try remuxxing it around and see what behavior I get.
the “Forced Flag” is used for ‘Foreign Language’ subs - their ONLY content are the lines spoken in languages other than that of the audio track… providing the settings in ‘Languages’ are made in such a way as to not confuse Plex (easier said than done - I get that).
Plex will automatically select the appropriate full sub track (not forced) when the sub track and the audio track have been correctly identified - Like I have a Chinese Audio track and English Subs <—Plex knows I’m gonna need those English Subs.
If you want auto-selection of English Subs with English Audio - we’re gonna need a new button in ‘Languages’ that reads: Always ON DAMMIT!
So far, that hasn’t happened. I know why you need 'em. I hope you can explain it to Plex.
I’m re-watching The Expanse (English/English) and at my age I miss some things spoken when a lot is going on so I like the subs on. There’s no setting for that. I have to turn 'em on. Every time. I get why it’s a bummer. I hope you can explain it to Plex.

If your server is updated, it means that this has not been fixed as I would have hoped. It seems I’ll have to stick with my server version for a looooong time, since it’s the only one that behaves as I want it.
