Not Allowed to use Hetzner

When using the html file all I get is this initializing Plex media server
Capture2

As you report this started 4 days ago the first question is are you using Hetzner ? If so check → Hetzner

I’d love to see Plex’s cloudflare analytics to see if there was a legitimate drop in traffic after the ban was introduced. My money would say that while there’s no traffic from the Hetzner network now, the overall number of requests would remain largely the same as people opted to proxy their traffic instead.

I am a paid Plex subscriber for many years and have always used Hetzner without any issues. Is there any way to contact Plex, maybe even the CEO, to change their mind about blocking Hetzner? It’s totally unfair on those of us who host it legitimately.

I’ve no doubt there’s ways to contact Plex, but if they were going to change their mind they would’ve done so by now.

The good news is: they haven’t banned Hetzner; they’ve only blocked it. You can still use your Hetzner server if you can figure out a way around the blockade.

I don’t see exactly what you’re missing aside the vast metadata from Plex.

Emby is an awesome valid alternative, it has support for TV Clients so I can share with my family and a great ATV app, UI I would say its even prettier than Plex, not as fluid though but definitely prettier…

This is off topic. The whole Emby Plex thing has been done so many times here and elsewhere. Emby lacks key features that Plex offers me. Clearly your needs are different.

Good luck and hope you work out another option for Hetzner (Emby also have a user forum which might be more relevant for you).

Emby still haven’t employed a spell checker. Just so amateurish but I keep it running just in case Plex falls over :smiley:

Take advantage of your server GPU. Emby has the most advanced and fastests hardware accelleration in the industry.

Has anyone considered pressuring Hetzner to stop hosting operators who don’t follow the law? Why is it Plex’s fault if they take steps to protect their business from illegal users?

Because the measure they took does nothing to stop resellers. It only stops the customers least familiar with Linux networking, who are generally not resellers. A reseller who wants to continue using Hetzner has lots of ways around this block.

Why should anyone do that? And why would Hetzner care? If some foreign company decides to abandon its customers just to please other local companies in its home country, is that Hetzners problem?
Is it Hetzners duty to control their own customers to make sure they follow ā€œthe lawā€ in some other part of the world?
This is so ridiculous.
So, Plex decided they don’t need customers who use Hetzner’s services. So be it. Of course Hetzner does not need Plex for anything at all. And now it is time for Hetzner’s customers to realize they don’t need Plex, too. It will be some days of work to migrate, but it is worth the effort.

Sure, no sense doing the right thing, so do the easy thing.

I have 50+ friends and host in my spare bedroom of my apartment…

Yes, conspiracy theories justify all sorts of irrational behavior.

West Mercia Police and FACT … that was in January, wasn’t it ?

Whilst the decision made by Plex is likely related to loss of revenue, the impact of piracy continues. Emby received some focus a few years ago and that is likely to resurface.

Good luck to those moving to other options.

Well time to leave Plex and go to another solution. This will definitely cause another product to take front and center. Shame Plex decided to turn to the darkside after all the support from the community.

@TeknoJunky

Why should we? Does Plex give us the benefit of the doubt? The answer is no.

Does Plex act reasonable and considerate? From their point of view they might, but not so much from those affected, that did nothing wrong in the first place.

@dane22
So lying about Plex own history is the way Plex wants to go. Pathetic.

And please, don’t care to answer me or that post, as it only could be more pathetic what ever Plex might have to say.

I’m really sad to see Plex go down this route. I feel lied to and cheated out of the value of my lifetime plex pass. I have not violated Plex’s terms but I’m being told I’m no longer allowed to use my server the way I’ve had it set up for years. I moved it to Hetzner because I wanted to let my sister in the UK access my server and my internet connection couldn’t handle that without slowing down everything else. Hetzner was also the cheapest option I found close to both of us geographically. At the time there was no mention anywhere from Plex that the server was not intended to run in the cloud.

Choosing to ban users that have not violated any terms of service because they use the same company as people who are is outrageous. Especially users that paid for the service.

Mark my words: I would caution all users to consider what this means for the future of plex, it’s clear that their goals to not align with the their original users and it won’t be long before you too are blindsided by some corporate BS that reads:

Plex was never intended to be [some other use case that was always supported and talked about within the community]

as they shift their focus to a new set of target users and keep your money.
