Not Allowed to use Hetzner

They are not banning users.

Semantics. They’ve banned the use of my server the way it has been set up for years without violating TOS. My user account remains but what other use does it have?

There still isn’t. Unless forums posts from random Plex employees are now part of the terms of service. All those terms of service say is this:

You may only use the PMS Software on a device or hardware that you own or control and as a part of your use of the Plex Solution or other Plex service.

Lots of people here want to interpret that “or control” in some way that excludes servers in data centers. But all of those interpretations fail to see that, if it meant physical control, they would have just left it at “on a device or hardware that you own.”

Meanwhile, the dreaded email says only this:

If you leave your current installation as-is, you will have issues connecting to it from Plex apps as well as managing it. To avoid these issues, we suggest that you consider alternative hosting options, including hosting it from your home. [my emphasis]

That language hardly rules out hosting in the cloud. It doesn’t even rule out hosting from Hetzner if you’re able to circumvent the block.

Will be interesting to see if Hetzner sues Plex over this.

No, very different conceptually.

I’ve had an IP range blocked from my usage of a service, within that range, by my ISP.

I wasn’t banned from using the service, just the ‘location’ of that service.

I’ve said a number of times this sucks.

However, twisting what had happened into something it isn’t, is disingenuous.

Plex, you morons! I came back from vacation and my server is inaccessible. Who the f
will repay me to spend 1 whole day (or more) to set up new server, install Ubuntu, configure everything, migrate database, test, re-pin all libraries in a few player apps!!!

WHO WILL PAY FOR MY TIME??? YOU?

And I do not even know if you do not BAN ME AGAIN ON ANOTHER SERVER which you will find not-suitable in the next 1 or 2 months.

OUTRAGEOUS. SHAMEFUL. This is not how you should treat customers. Piece of sh
 Plex!

You knew they were going to do this because you have posted in this very thread multiple times. Go take your faux outrage somewhere else.

An account for the forum. Not being a Plex user in general.

The user has Plex-Pass, what’s the problem is he was not a user in the forums? It is the same in Reddit, plenty of people who never posted there showed up to ask and complain about Hetzner block. So their complains are not valid because there were not there before?

They are valid. I just think its funny to make an account on something to say that you’re leaving.

I was away when the email was sent out to customers and missed the email , so was obviously completely oblivious when my server just stopped working the other day thinking i had broke something. As a premium plex pass user for many years and also a hetzner customer for legitimate reasons
 NOT EVERYONES A CRIMINAL
I feel that plex seems to think that they are above their customers , without customers there is no plex , did you stop to think about that in your combat on piracy ? What you thought people think that your product is so superior to other alternatives that you expect people to change there hosting providers to suit yourselves ??? It was far less hassle for me to switch over to a your biggest rival. To be honest a step i wish i had taken sooner , hassle free setup as opposed to plex , much nicer layout , more control options and no more 4k client issues.!!! So I have to say a thankyou to yourselves as well for forcing this upon me , I only wish you had done it sooner
 Adios Amigo !!!

I find it perfectly valid for someone to create an account just for expressing disappointment about a decision that is affecting them enough to make them leave. Plex may not care about our feedback, but they should still receive it.

Without central authorisation they can’t really do anything. I’m free to use their software and connect direct to my server without having anything to do with their servers on the way.

As it stands right now, they couldn’t stop you even if they wanted to. And it looks like for the foreseeable future that’s how its staying. For good or bad however you see it.

Aslong as they leave me alone i really don’t care who else is useing it or what they are doing.

  1. So what? I still think this is outrageous and shameful. I do not care much if you like it or not. You are not the party of my complaint.

  2. NOWHERE in Plex e-mail was info about Hetzner. NOWHERE. I replied to this e-mail and NEVER got a reply from Plex. This is how they care about customers. They are obviously busy with sending another marketing spam e-mails. I got 6 servers and I asked them which server will be shut down. I asked them by e-mail and I asked them here on the forum. But they never found time to take care of this and reply. Yes. It was so 100% obviuos this would be Hetzner server

Have to laugh at Plex employees involved in lengthy tech support threads trying to solve problems caused by the Hetzner ban and the extremely poor way it was (not) communicated. Never occurred to them to maybe give a lot more lead time, or to send more than one email, or to make it explicit what they were banning and what options customers have.

I’d almost feel sorry for the Plex employees here if I weren’t so annoyed at the company and if any of them exhibited the tiniest hint of understanding, empathy, or contrition.

Companies this incompetent at customer relations deserve to go down the tubes.

I think everyone unfairly impacted by this decision should complain here and make their case. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. It’s the only way the Plex team will know how people feel.

And I understand how lots of people are really mad about this. But I have no tolerance for people who post conspiracy theories or resort to insults.

“I saw @elan and the cONtEnT MAfiA in the closet making a deal and I saw one of the deals and the deal looked at me.” I see a post like that, my :hammer: comes out.

While I feel for the people impacted I have to trust Plex’s analysis, that this was a necessary step. With thoughtful and logical feedback, perhaps they can be persuaded to make a course correction, but unhinged rants are not going to help the cause or make this forum a nicer place.

Has anyone given thought as to why Plex seems to refuse to mention the name “Hetzner” anywhere in public? Not in the emails, not in this thread that I’m aware of (please correct me if I’m wrong), and even on that support thread they are referring to “German” providers but not by name.

Why are they afraid to come out clean and say it?

On that thread, I made a comment to the effect of “what they’re referring to is Hetzner.” They deleted my comment.

Emby is working flawlessly.
It’s been a week now, and it performs way better than Plex. Minor loading time, hardware acceleration out of the box, same users management system (with permissions), in a few words IT IS A BETTER ALTERNATIVE.
