Not detecting m4v TV files on media server

Server Version#: 1.21.1.3830-6c22540d5
Player Version#: 1.25.0.1511-47afccd4

I have only recently started using plex, so forgive any ignorance
I have been using plex just fine for my music and films. I have added some TV shows in a TV directory, and while I can see the folders, most of the actual files are not shown. I believe they are all m4v files, but my films directory works fine with m4v files. All these files work when played through windows 10 on other media players. I have scanned library files numerous times, and it will pick up new music or films but not the existing tv. I have tried removing the file directory and adding it again and it still only detects the folders and some of the files.

  1. Any advice on why it doesn’t seem to detect the TV m4v files? (note it does detect some but very few, and in some subfolders none)
  2. Is the naming of the files important? Most are just named generically like “tvshow-season-episode”

Thanks for any support :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

  3. Go to
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB

In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie (Legacy)
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase

Afterwards, Refresh Metadata of the affected items.

If your movie library already uses the new “Plex Movie” agent, do this instead:
Edit your movie library
go to the ‘Advanced’ tab
clear the check mark out of “Prefer local metadata”

Afterwards, Refresh Metadata of the affected items.

For proper recognition, display, and downloading of metadata, yes.

Read the Naming & Organizing support article OttoKerner mentions. Plex is very picky with TV show naming & structure.

The TV shows must be in a TV show library. You cannot mix movies and TV shows in the same library. Plex will not recognize them correctly.

If any movies or TV shows were purchased from iTunes, Google, etc, and contain digital rights management, don’t bother trying to add it to Plex. They will display, but not play, in Plex. Plex cannot play any DRM protected media. You will receive an error message stating such if you try to play DRM protected media.
