Not recording

When someone is watching the same channel on Silicon Dust HD Homerun and Plex the show scheduled it doesn’t record it. This has happened multiple times. My mother-in-law lives with us and watches the same shows we try to record and we lose them (Plex doesn’t record them). Is there some way I can prevent this from happening? I do have the “Allow partial airings” checked.

Are they watching Live TV via the Silicon Dust HDHR client, or through Plex? If they are using the HDHR client then that is what is causing the issue. Plex expects that it has full control over tuners once they are configured through the Plex server. If tuners are being used outside of Plex, such as with the HD Homerun client, then Plex will likely end up with recording failures when it tries to allocate a tuner and gets an error back from the HDHR.

The way to prevent this is to always use Plex to watch Live TV.

Yes she is watching through the Silicon Dust HDHR client but I have 4 receivers all to the same antenna and she is the only one watching TV. I would think that Plex would use one of the other tuners! When we use Plex to watch live TV the audio is out of sync with the video which drives us all crazy and we get a lot more buffering. Plex and Silicon Dust have a good relationship and I think the techies could resolve this situation. Silicon Dust records every show being watched so it could be potentially watched by someone else on a different TV without using another receiver, there needs to be an exception.

Yep, I hear ya. If you google “plex share tuner between clients” you should find old threads where this was discussed, but isn’t supported. Here is one that also has where other people encountered the problem of not recording when a non-Plex client is in use, even when there are still tuners available.

However, I can’t find that there is an actual feature request for making this change, so my suggestion is that you create one. Also, you should be able to get Live TV to work through Plex! If you want to pursue that then also open another thread regarding your Live TV issue. Make sure to include as much detail as you can - server version, client type, wired or wifi for the server and the client(s), server debug level logs…

Thanks for the input, I first coding in the early 60’s, now retired & don’t have the energy to even chase things down much less fixing them! I try to get the younger energetic techies to contribute.

I like where you are on problem solving. Maybe one day I will be there, but I suspect OCD will keep me going.

Another approach that is technically simpler, but more expensive, is to buy another HDHR tuner. Never configure the new device in Plex, and dedicate it to watching Live TV through the HDHR client. Continue to use your current device for Plex recording. If a 2 tuner will meet your Live TV needs then it should be cheaper than what you previously paid for your 4 tuner.

Good idea, I have 2 HD devices (both have 2 tuners) and have tried that. The HD nas app automatically connects to both devices. Silicon Dust should be able to change it so this would work. I would record everything with HDHR except we RV and I can get to my NAS with Plex from anywhere. The simplest thing is for my mother-in-law not to watch anything we are recording but that is easier said than done (she sort of does what she wants).
