Not Removing Media When Files Are Removed

Server Version#: 1.19.1.2589
Player Version#: 4.30.2

I am having an issue that has persisted a few versions now. If I remove a folder of music (say “John Williams”) and it contains a few albums, or even just one, it will not remove from Plex. I can find the “media” in Plex and it the Get Info will show Unavailable and it will not remove. Now, for most I can Delete it via Plex and it goes away but some will give me an error (remember, the media is already gone).

Plex used to remove the media entry when a file/folder was removed, but that has not been happening recently.

Any ideas? This only affects music (that I am aware of).

Please note, if I move one album from one folder to another, I get Blank Media and then a new entry comes up. This seems different, but thought I would mention that as well.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Here is a video of the issue, as it might be hard for me to explain. I can provide logs as well, though I thought I would wait until someone has a specific task they want me to provide.

Looks like you have configured your server to automatically scan updated files (Settings > Server > Library > Scan my library automatically is checked) in addition to allowing Plex to keep deleted items until you specifically remove them (Settings > Server > Library > Empty trash automatically after every scan is unchecked). Personally I recommend unchecking the Empty trash... setting for everybody who’s automatically updating their library or who might occasionally lose connection to an external drive… even in scenarios where the drive can take a while to spin-up. This way you don’t lose your library if there’s a hiccup with the scanning (as mentioned… e.g. if the drive isn’t responding as fast as the Plex scanner wants it to).

You should be able to manually trigger Empty Trash from the library’s context menu (library: ... > Manage Library > Empty Trash).

I don’t mind those suggestions, and I will reply only with a typical “end user know-it-all” response, I am sorry. But, why would this change be necessary 5+ years into Plex?

Regardless, I am cool with that. However, I have done manual re-scans, and etc., and no dice. Plus, this issue ONLY affects Music, which is on a hard drive that is the same as two other libraries I have that work 100%.

But please, know I am appreciative of your reply and suggestion, but looking to carry the conversation a bit further, as there is clearly an issue. I am thinking of regressing to a version of Plex maybe 3 or 4 versions back to see if there was an issue. Any chance you can think of a revision that brought a change that could affect music?

in that case… let me counter with a similar know-it-all response:
You might have changed some of those settings (knowingly or accidentally).

Have you actually double-checked these settings?

Yes, I had checked those settings. In fact, I have removed them, and ran everything. I even restored the system back two weeks in case there was some sort of conflict.

It certainly could be because of the idiot Mac OS Catalina update, though I am not sure of the timing of the problem vs the update, as the issue could have persisted well prior. The last time I bulk worked on Music was 2+ months ago.

Version 1.18.5.2309 works as expected. i just worked on the same files and it went as it has for years. something changed in file management since then. I wonder what?

So, I have hated Apple for a quiet a while now but had never owned a Windows machine. I decided to build my own and it was successful. I have migrated to the new Windows machine and the Plex transfer went very smooth (relatively speaking). However, with Music, as before on the Mac and as stated above, the exact same thing is occurring. Only on Music.

So, to recap, files are removed, the trash can icon appears, I do Empty Trash, and then it gives me an error.

As requested, the Plex server on Windows had automatic settings turned off, empty trash after each scan turned off, etc.

Thoughts?

(New hard drives, formatted for Windows [exFAT], and it’s occurring with both MP3 and FLAC files)
