Server Version#: Version 1.14.0.5470
Player Version#: Version 3.79.0
I am using Plex on Ubuntu 18.04 I am assuming the above is correct. Using Firefox to connect to:
https://app.plex.tv/desktop#!/settings/server/…
The Dots represent rand character following “server/”
Plex seems to understand band name containing numbers such as “10,000 Maniacs”, “SR-71” or even “4 Non Blondes”, however if the band name is fully numeric such as “311” it does not. I have checked the ID3 tags of the songs of the two albums I have from them, they are correct.
I can log into the server, and click home and see the “Recently” added 311 album. Plex however calls it by the proper Album title but the artist is “Unknown”. I can then try to change it by selecting the edit pencil on the album cover and changing the band to “311”. When I click “Save” it appears to save it because the image for the album flips, then a moment later it flips again and the Artist is once again “Unknown”. If I select the Library “Music”, select “Folders” drop down and navigate to each of the two “311” albums, All of the data is correct, however I can not find the under the Artist when trying to view all the albums “311” has unless I look under “Unknown” instead. Changing the artist when under “Folders” does the same as changing it under “Recently”, nothing changes the artist. I have even completely removed albums by moving out of the directory tree, and went so far as removing the entire artist directory that contains all of the album sub-directories and later returning them. All of my MP3s have been thoroughly checked for the following tags:
“Title”, “Album”, “Artist”, “Album Artist”, “CD #”, “Year”, “Track”, “Genre”
Also each MP3 has an embedded cover, the same as the “cover.png” file I use for the “.directory” for each album directory. No other tags are used and I use both ID3v1.1 and ID3v2.3.0 for EVERY MP3 file. I manually have checked ALL data on all the problematic “311” MP3s and have found no incorrect data. Doing the same procedures to correct ANY other albums/artists works fine. The stubborn ones I sometimes have to remove, thoroughly check (twice), and put back into their proper sub-directories. sometimes just removing a directory from the library and replacing after Plex has noticed it missing fixes everything without having to do anything else. I still check all the files and edit them if need be.
All album covers are 500px by 500px so they can be clearly seen without taking up too much space on the Hard Drive. I am not having this problem with ANY other Album name. Ok. Since I was writing this I thought of an idea to try. I used an album from 98 Rock in Baltimore, this is one I converted from vinyl and renamed the “Album Artist” and “Artist” to “123” and added it to the folder 123 in the Music Library and it worked. So why won’t “311”?
My directory tree for these two albums is “/home/username/media/Music/Albums/0-9/311/album”. I keep my directory tree compartmentalized. The path starts with “/home/walter/media/Music/Albums” or “/home/walter/media/Music/Soundtracks” and is broken down alphabetically by placing each band starting in “A” under directory “A”, followed by the band name, then album Name" The album names I use combine the year and album title such as “1972 Album Name”. For Example:
Say if a band was named “Warmonger”, and they had an album in 1968 called “World War”. The full address would be: “/home/walter/media/Music/Albums/W/Warmonger/1968 World War”
Each track in the album directory is an MP3 at 320 compression, named by track number, followed by track title. ALL albums directories contain tracks in MP3 format, album covers called cover.png (in PNG format), and playlist.m3u files. If the album contains multiple CDs then I have sub-directories “CD 1” through “CD 9” or if more than 9 CDs “CD 01” through “CD 99” as needed. So far never needed more than say “CD 5”
I do this to be able to find albums and associated data quickly when browsing using a file browser. Otherwise I loose the “Year” data unless I run a music player such as VLC or tag editor such as EasyTag to fin the year. I have given you probably more data than you need to understand my setup, including my method of filing the music tracks. Please note: I intend to include ALL tracks on any album I store on my server, even if I only like one track on the entire album. Of course if I dislike and album or band… no inclusion.
