Qnap NAS based Plex - what GPU for HW transcoding?

Hi,

I have a Qnap TS-863U (firmware 4.3.6.0923) running Plex (1.15.6.1079), all working fine.

the TS-863U has an AMD GX-420MC CPU (4 core, 2,000Mhz) and whilst that’s just fine for 99% of stuff, it simply can’t deal with transcoding high bit-rate stuff or 4K (unsurprisingly).

As it has PCI-E slots (I believe it’s X8 but not 100% on this), I was looking for a GPU solution.

Looking at Qnap’s info, they only have compatible network cards listed - I guess they saw no reason to certify GPU’s?

Has anybody installed a GPU on a Qnap?

Suggestions? - or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Thanks for your time.

The Rules of 4k and plex.

The first rule of 4k is , don’t bother transcoding 4k

The second rule of 4k is, DON’T bother transcoding 4k

The third rule of 4k is, If you cannot direct play 4k, then perhaps you should not even be collecting 4k.

Nice…

How about an actual answer to the question?

How about a bit of manners?
This comment comes off as pretty snarky.

To answer your question:

  1. Refer to the QNAP Hardware Compatibility Guide for your unit.
  2. From that list, select an nVidia product which meets your needs.

Hi,

I did, all the stuff I could see is network related, did not see any GPU’s?

Any suggestions/recommendations? ideally need something that can deal with x265 as well as x264.

was looking for a head-less GPU but the only one I can find is the nVidia Tesla car, and apart from being big bucks, it’s a full height car and I don;t think that’s a starter (Qnap is a 2U high box).

Thanks for the response.

Some of QNAP NAS models don’t support a GPU because of power supply limitations.

They have the PCI-E slots for USB, ethernet, etc, but can’t handle a GPU card.

I’ve asked their Engineering folks about it and the primary drivers are:

  1. No secondary supply
  2. No room in the unit for a larger supply (like the TVS-1282’s can accommodate).

This said, If there are no recommended GPUs on QNAP’s list (they are very liberal on GPUs), then there are none which will work at all and the most likely reason is “Lack of power”. The next most likely reason is “Insufficient depth or width for a card” (half-length and single width cards only).

Thought that might be the case, clearly the PSU is not going to support a big/powerful card, (250W), was just hoping for a cheap older card solution like a nVidia P600 or the like?

I was looking to see if anybody else has going down this route?

thanks for the help

If you can find a way (B&H photo carries QNAP OEM supplies), that will help you out a lot.
You’d have a one-off that way.

The next big hurdle, which you can check right now, is:

Can you install the NVIDIA_GPU_DRV package in the NAS.
If you can, then there’s a route forward. If not, you have your definitive answer.

interesting…

Driver wise, apparently yes:

https://www.qnap.com/en-us/app_releasenotes/list.php?app_choose=NVIDIA_GPU_DRV

so, looks like I’m back to what card…

Ok, so now it comes down to finding a card which is:

a. virtually ZERO power
b. supported by the driver

-or-

a. you can find a way to get a 400+ watt supply in the box. (QNAP STORE?)

This is all I get from the store

https://shop.qnap.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=35_343

Is this the RP version or standard ?

If the RP, it should have a redundant supply.

It would look like this:
https://shop.qnap.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=35_344&product_id=244

Sadly, it’s the NON-RP version - one PSU.

Then sadly, you’re stuck. 250 watts isn’t going to handle spinning the drives (12 vdc) and driving the GPU card.

I fear your right…

whenever I built a PC with 8 drives, I put a 550w in it . CPU, GPU, and drives.

yea, this is not a PC though, and to be fair, it was not specced specifically for this job, and it’s no the only job it’s doing,

I bought the 1282-i7 for that reason. Headless PC in a box with HD’s. Serves many purposes

And I got the 1282-i5

Yea, if I was doing this again, I’d go with a xeon based pizza box… (I may still do this, keep the data on the NAS and run Plex separately)

If you are going for a xeon, please make certain it has QSV support in the CPU.
Most do not.
