Nvidia Sheild Pro PMS is simply rife with problems

Server Version#: 1.19.3.2839
Player Version#: All so far (Android phone, Plex on Shield

Maybe it’s a better client than server, but I’m finding there are just some serious problems with using the Nvidia Shield pro as your PMS.

  • Video offline sync doesn’t work.
    • Items error out on the mobile device
    • PMS claims it’s waiting for a transcode despite transcoding being unpaused
    • There are no items in the transcode queue.
    • Creating an optimized version works, but it will not sync to the device and remains at 50% progress until it either fails or claims a false success.
  • Offline playback doesn’t work
    • Even though I’m playing content local to the box, since it’s offline, it fails.
    • Plex is dead if the internet is out. At least the VLC player app works…
  • 4K (and sometimes 1080) fight that the connection isn’t fast enough despite being LOCAL on the box itself
    • I don’t even know how this makes any sense.
  • HD music tracks don’t play higher than 48khz / 24bit and music doesn’t pass-through. This may not be unique to Shield as PMS.
  • The network file copying is sketchy when I add new items to the server
    • The shield only supports SMB protocols. Sometimes it fails, sometimes it works, despite being on my cabled network. Both times
    • It’s fairly slow to copy. 750mbps to / 350 mbps from.

I guess building a desktop setup is the only way to do it properly.

The only thing I can think to try left is factory-resetting the shield and hoping it fixes the offline sync issue, but I don’t have much hope on the other problems working themselves out. If YOU are having better success hosting PMS with your Shield Pro, or have some fix suggestions, I’m all ears.

I’m thinking of moving my Plex server from a shared desktop to a dedicated server and the Shield TV seemed like the most economical. However, after reading this and seeing no responses, I think I may want to rethink that.

It’s too bad because a dedicated PC is a lot more expensive…
