Nvidia Shield 2019: Next episode starts playing in the background

When I’m watching a TV episode and the episode finishes, Plex shows me the “continue watching” screen, but for some reason Plex starts playing the next episode in the background completely by itself and when I confirm that I wish to continue watching, then the next episode won’t start from the beginning, but from somewhere further along. I can hear the audio of the upcoming episode playing in the background while the “continue watching” screen is visible.

If I decide to exit the “continue watching” screen, then Plex thinks I’ve already started watching the episode and that I decided not to finish, so the next time I want to continue the show, it won’t start the episode from the beginning either. I have “Play ‘up next’ videos” disabled in the settings. This issue first occurred about 6 months ago after some update and I haven’t been able to solve it since.

try that and see if the problem is still there.

I updated Plex to the latest version and cleared the cache for good measure. It didn’t happen when I tried it now, but it’s possible it’s an intermittent issue. I will have to test for a few days and report back. I usually exit the “up next” screen before it has a chance to start playing anything, so I can’t say for sure whether it happens every time or not. The player might also behave differently when I fast forward to the end of the episode, so we’ll have to see.

This is a very old bug that Plex is aware of but it doesn’t seem to be a priority or they can’t fix it. It doesn’t happen everytime, so must have been working ok the one time they tried it. Drives me crazy how long this has been happening.

bug fixing seems like a non-existent task for Plex, probably everyone has been pushed to adding “features” that make them money before trying to secure more VC funding.

Glad to know I’ve not been the only one with this bug. I’ve watched like 5 episodes so far and it hasn’t occurred again. Seems like at the very least it doesn’t happen as frequently as it used to. I remember when I first started getting this bug, it seemed to happen after every episode.

I’m not sure if it’s exactly the same bug, but I used to have the next episode wouldn’t play at all. And you would have to back out and play it manually. Since the new demuxer that bug has appeared less on my Shield, but on my Fire Stick it still happens like 80% of the time.

The playing the next episode in the background bug still happens about 10% of the time on both devices. It also seems most likely during the first post-play. After that it almost never reoccurs. Makes me think something gets stuck in the player when the device goes to sleep. Or it has to do with how Android treats suspended background apps. That’s probably why it’s so hard to troubleshoot.
