Next episode play issues on Shield TV

Server Version#: 1.25.6.5577
Player Version#: 8.31.0

Hello, I’ve been experiencing an issue for a while now where if I’m watching a TV series and the current episode finishes, then the next episode starts playing in the background before the countdown has finished and the next episode shows subtitles even though I have them turned off (the toggle still shows them being off)

This results in me missing the intro to the next episode and also means I have to turn subtitles on and back off again to get then to disappear.

This has been the case for the last few months so has persisted through numerous app and server updates.

Any ideas? I recently went back on the beta branch on Android TV and this didn’t help at all.

Bump, any ideas?

Hello? Some response from Plex would be appreciated…

Having this same issue as well. Subtitles turn on for seemingly no discernible reason.

Plex, why is the support and acknowledgement of core issues so sparse/poor?

using 8.30.2 on Shield Pro 2019,

Autoplay next is working.

Yes, it’s working for me also but it’s starting playback of the next episode in the background (can hear audio) before the countdown reaches zero and subtitles are turning themselves on when I have them disabled globally.

Bump, still having this issue…

@ChuckPa we aren’t contesting that auto play is completely broken (doesn’t even go to the next episode).

As OP mentioned, subtitles are turning on when they are disabled globally, as well as the audio beginning before the countdown ends … can you speak to this? Specifically the subtitle issue, many folks here and on Reddit have experienced this issue with tv shows and in the auto play context.

Bump again, would like a response that isn’t just “It’s working for me”…

I am new to Plex and I have this issue as well on my Nvidia shield. Sometimes with autoplay I’ll not only get subtitles show up but it will use the Spanish or commentary audio track. Changing it while it’s playing doesn’t do anything and I have to back out and select the episode again then it plays fine.

Hello? Another week passed without a response or asking for further information to try and recreate the problem.

I would like a response please.

This bug has been present ever since they put out the “nightly” build with the new demuxer 2 months ago. Even if you fully turn off Autoplay Next, it begins playing the audio for the next episode automatically (and turns on subtitles if you switch to video).

I got zero feedback in that “nightly” thread to any of my comments or questions, so don’t hold your breath… but maybe since this bug is in the beta builds it will actually get some attention (Still there in official beta 9.1.0).

Crazy idea: How about a “feature freeze” for 6 months and focus only on bugs? Wouldn’t that be amazing?! I’m getting very tired of having to fall back to KODI.

I have this same issue, I posted about it on r/plex and got no reply. It’s pretty frustrating. When you select the episode, the subtitles are still on and I have to enable them and then disable them to get them to go away. I now can’t reliably let a show finish with the knowledge that it won’t start playing the next episode. Tonight I am going to test enabling play next, playing an episode in full and starting the next one then disabling it, playing another episode and seeing if it is resolved.

Seriously, what is the point of a support forum if nobody from Plex replies?

Looks like it’s FINALLY fixed after 2 months of ghosted feedback.

Unfortunately not, just updated and still having the same issue…this is getting ridiculous now.

I posted on their Twitter and Facebook about it earlier but I’m not holding out much hope based on the lack of response here.

Still no recognition of this still being an issue. I’ve messaged you on Twitter and Facebook and you don’t reply.

Seriously, this is the poorest support I’ve ever had (or not had I guess).

It’s fixed in beta, that’s what the guy linked you to. It hasn’t come to the stable release yet. If you want a fix today then you’ll need to install the beta.

It’s not fixed in the latest beta for me. They SAY it’s fixed in the changelog… but I fell asleep last night watching Snowfall (I have playnext turned off completely) and when I woke up, 3 episodes had lapsed in the background (audio only). I’ve moved on to Emby. Plex is a dumpster fire at this point.

As @rossbeck stated, it’s not fixed in the beta. That’s what I meant by “just updated” I’m more than aware I needed to install the beta…

I know it’s not a bug that makes it unusable, but the lack of support is frankly astounding.
