Don’t want to beat a dead horse on the AVer Media single tuner issue, but, even the ‘basic’ OTA DVR boxes (<$40) will warn about a conflict and retune to the channel needed for recording a given show. Will likely abandon AVer Media USB tuner for the moment.
A newer test image is being released by Nvidia tonight addressing/resolving the Hauppauge Dual tuner discovery, as well as several Plex related issues.
I had the problem with the server not remembering the storage location, changed from internal to internal (user). The fix for me was to set the external storage location in plex to internal (user), stop the server and then go to app info in android settings and clear the cache and restart the server. After that it seems to be saving the storage settings and after rebooting the shield it continues to work.
Same problem. The upgrade renamed my plex server to “Shield Android TV” and disabled my original server 'Shield". I cannot set my old server to Active.
Just purchased the Shield. Using USB external storage. Used PLEX for years on Windows server but OMG the last 3 days i have factory restored my shield and reinstalled PLEX countless times. Works great for DO NOT restart or power off the machine OR you have to start over. Or reverts to “local host”.
Not sure if this is issue with new release. Maybe shield does not like external USB drive. Using Seagate Expansion 2TB Portable External Hard Drive USB 3.0 (STEA2000400). If there is only one USB on the planet that will work please let me know. I’m real close to returning the Shield, which i do not want to do. A little upset i purchased the lifetime membership last month. There must be a setting in the config somewhere that is lost when you power cycle this box. Please PLEX dev jump in and help. I’ve read several threads on this forum where people are having this issue and it sucks!
I had the same problem, I finally got it working after a lot of trial and error. Not sure of the order of operations but this is what I did:
Move storage location in plex
stop server
go into android settings go to app details for plex media server
clear cache
go back to plex and start server, move storage location again if needed
reboot server and confirm storage location is still set correctly.
Eventually it worked, pretty sure the key step was clearing the plex media server cache in android app settings. Now rebooting doesn’t lose the storage location setting.
Just wanted to drop a note of thanks on this… I was having this exact same issue with my new Nvidia Shield 16GB running Plex 1.14.1.5488 with the data stored on an external USB drive. Rebooting the shield would kill the server and require a complete rebuild when it came back up. Followed spamies suggestion about clearing the cache after moving to USB storage and the server stays valid across reboots now.
For what it’s worth when I reboot the shield, I first go into the plex app and ‘stop’ the server cleanly first, then reboot. Then I manually start the server back up when the Shield boots back up. Not sure if it’s necessary or not.
The second I move my data to external storage, Plex gives me a version incompability error and flat refuses to connect to my Server.
I’ve tried all the steps posted above and it won’t restart my server. It says it does, but it just stays offline.
I’m running the latest beta and I’m still having issues. Everything was working great until Nvidia pushed these updates out and I’m really close to just ditching my Shield entirely because of it.
The 7.2 update made Plex unusable on my 2015 Nvidia Shield Pro too. In my case, I cannot mount anymore my local network external drives. Both the 7.2.1 and 7.2.2 updates did not fix this issue for me, so the only way to access the local files on my Shield is either via VLC or Kodi.
However, even before the last Shield Experience update I had noticed some performance problems with Plex. Several video files did not play smoothly with Plex, although they played well with other video apps. All my local network is wired and used to work very well with the Plex Media Server running on my Nvidia Shield.
I still hope for a working fix from the Nvidia people, but I’m also starting to consider some alternatives to the Shield, Plex or even both. The easiest one would be running the PMS on a dedicated pc instead of the Shield, but it wouldn’t be cheap.
Thanks, I will try that too later. So far I had tried clearing the cache and data from the Media Storage app, as suggested by the Nvidia team. It briefly worked after the 7.2.1 Nvidia Experience update, but shortly after I lost the connection to the mounted network drives again and since then I could not set it up again.
Last night I also installed the 7.2.2 beta release, but unfortunately it didn’t fix this issue. At least not for me.
The fix I posted is only to fix moving the plex local data from internal system storage to user storage. If you are not able to mount network shares that is a shield issue and only nvidia will be able to fix that. They did mention something about requiring a valid wins server.
I don’t know what happened, but eventually the 7.2.2 beta release did fix the issue with my Nvidia Shield and last night I was finally able to mount my external network drives again. I still have to test the system more, but so far I had no playback issue with Plex. It took a while, but I must thank the Nvidia team for their support.
If this goes down one more time, I’m done with these devices. These firmware updates have been some of the most buggiest things I’ve ever had to deal with.
My Shield updated from the test firmware to 7.2.2 and once again, my Plex Server was broken. That’s now 4 times since I first installed the update.
I’m very close to unloading both of my Shield’s because of this headache.
Basically, what’s happening is every time I restart my Shield TV, it wants me to setup a new Plex sever and drops the connection to the one that I just made.
Hi Guys
I also have problems with the Plex server on the Shield TV.
One problem is the Hauppauge tuner, that broke with the 7.2 update. This problem Nvidia is working on however.
Another thing that seems to have got really bad in the lastest 7.2.2 is buffering of video files.
I have all my material on a NAS and now when I play videofiles in plex it buffers around 30 seconds before the material starts playing.
When it is playing fast forwarding is fast enough. Also playing music is at full speed.
I think it maybe is connected to some kind of network issue due to the last update, but it is funny that this does not affect music files.
