@spamies Thank you so much for your efforts and the solution! I was searching the Shield forum for days but your solution only worked for me. Now my PMS doesn’t loose its location after reboot and even after firmware upgrade(7.2.2 final test image).
I heard that NVIDIA is working with Plex to solve this issue, but in the mean time, you found the only solution that actually workaround this painful issue. Why don’t you report your workaround to Shield team and Plex to help them to figure out the cause?
Thank you again.
the update killed PMS for me. it refreshed all of the metadata and mixed everything up. recently added is all in the wrong order and I have to go back and rename some titles because it reversed the changes I made to them. Some files are appearing as the exact names of the files now. I spent days fixing things like this ugh and now i have to do it all over again. Has anyone else had this issue when using the shield as plex media server? I have to constantly update my libraries because everything keeps getting out of order and seasons and episodes keep disappearing. Here are my recent logs

After much trial and error, I have decided to use the default Plex Player and PMS that come with the Shield out of the box.
I have now been running Plex for over a week and it has been absolutely flawless!
The only downside to this is the older interface and the fact that I have lost the ability to share Shield content to my PC (through Samba file sharing).
LockePMS, what do you mean by default PMS? Just the unupdated version?
2017 16GB Shield, Synology NAS all on local wired LAN here, same as others had the server die a few times, or rather suddenly be offline and comatose, and most of all an annoying connection issue so that every video file played eventually, but only after a 15sec wait time showing the orange circle. It is driving me insane and am also considering to throw out Plex for something else…showing good metadata is fine and all, but if files don’t play properly, its useless.
New to both Shield and Plex as of December 2018.
Installed and ran fine, set up PMS, spent hours configuring all of my media.
Was pleased with Plex so bought the Plex pass.
A few days ago, got a notice of a 7.2.2 update for shield which said it could be installed now or would install in the wee hours on it’s own.
Ran the install, all works fine except for Plex. The server is MIA and hasn’t been seen since. Message on web browser saying Shield android tv unavailable. Plex on Shield says server not found (or something like that)
SMB share still working for WD USB3 3GB passport adopted storage.
Can’t figure out how to get server back. Any hints?
See this post for the fix, basically you just need to clear the PMS app cache and restart.
Is there a way to move the storage location if even the Plex app on the Shield can’t connect to the Plex server on the Shield?
Edit: NVM, I realize this is done in the Shield settings, not the Plex settings.
As I have about 2.6TB of data on the adopted storage, will there be enough room on the internal storage (16GB model)? I assume it only moves the database, not the media.
I think you have to do it within the plex client app. You can try clearing the cache and data for the plex media server in android application settings and then try starting the server setup again and moving the location.

In your experience, does that delete the entire configuration and meta data for the server?
To answer my own question, I deleted the cache with no effect, then deleted the data and rebooted the Shield, then the server came back and I had to start from scratch. Any way to restore from my old server as I had done probably 10-12 hours of configuration?
What is the latest on this? Has an update been pushed by either Nvidia or Plex that resolves this? I lost my server after a power outage and I’m hoping it’s not gone forever…
Is there a way to backup the server on a shield as a fail safe in the future?
OP here. So far I am still on the 7.2.1 firmware, but will try to update to 7.2.2 later today. As I mentioned in me previous post, the issues I had were fixed after multiple tries. Several days after that post, the inability to connect outside my network resolved on its own.
I hope there are no issues with the update on my end. I have read some posts in this thread about clearing the cache, but I would hate to do that as I am pretty sure I will lose all of my Plex settings, metadata, etc.
What I still find dumbfounding and absurd is that, after almost 1.5 months that I started this thread, not one single Plex support person has posted in here offering assistance. I find this lack of support disturbing, especially when many of the posters here have a Plex Pass and have contributed to this company with their money. It only speaks negatively of the company and will certainly make other users stay away from Plex and look for other alternatives.
Thanks for the update. I’d like to add some more media to the external drive plugged into the shield, but I’m not sure how to do that without ejecting it and risking losing the server and all the settings and changes I’ve made.
I have the same frustrations with Plex, but I also recognize that it’s a niche product and a small team. They likely don’t have the capacity to diagnose these issues really quickly. That said, they should make more of an effort to communicate with us, let people know they are aware of the issue and are working on a fix. Even if they don’t give a timeline, it’s helpful to know it’s a priority.
I am very interested in updating PMS to 1.14.x since I would like to activate the dashboard and the new Administrator functions new there - What do you mean exactly by Play Store install on NVIDIA ? Should I re-download the APP ??? Should I run the update from the Settings App ??? Thanks Marcello -
nVidia Shield Android TV - (model P2571 ver 8.0.0 sw 7.2.1 (30.6.129.32) -
Plex Player and PMS versions (3.85.1 -Web Client) 7.10.0.8875 and 1.13.5.5332 (smb)
I got the shield after all of the rave reviews about running plex on it. Since, purchasing:
- cant use hauppauge wintv
- records sporadically on silcondust hdhomerun
- live tv doesnt even bother showing up on the pms running on plex either. But I can watch it just fine from the web client
- consistent lags or lock ups on the plex client on the shield
At this point, I can’t even get the get the guide to refresh. Meanwhile, the native live tv app works perfect.
I’ve tried all of the cache deletes and restarts. Tried full factory resets of the shield itself. As a user of plex for a LONG LONG time, they really dropped the ball on this one imo.
Has there been any development on this? Any input from Plex staff?
Hello I just bought the Nvidia shield android-tv and love it but after reading all this I’m afraid to update the Plex Server itself…??? Any solutions yet? I don’t want to lose my libraries and restart over and over
Using HDHOMERUN prime with Plex server on shield. Problem I have is a message of “weak signal” and live tv drops out and recordings “fail”. HDHOMERUN has 90% signal, plays fine on live channels app and on HDHOMERUN app. Tried recording to different drives, no change. Ran internet speed test, 100mbps. Got to be a Plex problem. What’s the fix?
I’m on 7.22 and still can’t get SMB mounts to work. Any updates on this. Kodi can see my SMB mounts but not the Nvidia Plex server.
Just purchased the Nvidia Shield just to use it as a Plex server. Cannot get it to work at all, previously had Plex set up on a PC and it worked really well. When searching for my Shield it is constantly offline, and trying to start Plex server in the settings just results in a timeout. Looks like it’s back to Kodi. Shame really.
EDIT : Had another go, cleared the cache of both PMS and Plex and reconnected PMS and it is working. Have restarted the Shield a few times and it is continuing to work as it should. Happy days…!
I have the Shield as a PLEX server and works fine for me. Since you just bought it, have you gone to the Play store to see if there’s any updates for PLEX? You may have 2 updates for PLEX, one for the PMP and the other is the PMS. Where is your media at that the server on the shield will use? For me I use a MyCloud NAS attached to the router. Give as much detail as possible as to what you’re setup is, what you have done so far and what issues you’re having.
